Description of the Arms
The Armorial Bearings consist of arms crest, badge, supporters and motto.
The design of the Arms allowed the livery colours to be blue and gold. The oak tree alludes to the Arms of Nottinghamshire County Council and to Sherwood Forest.
The lozenge chief, consisting of a pattern of black diamonds, refers to the coal mining industry and the garbs or wheatsheaves to farming.
The Mural Crown in the crest signifies Gedling’s borough status whilst the torch symbolises industry and the arrows which appear in the old arms of Arnold allude to the Sherwood connection.
The badge includes two miners’ spades and a knot which is known heraldically as a ‘Lacy Knot’. The last is a reference to the lace industry.
The stag, which appears on the left of the shield, also features as a supporter in the Arms of Nottinghamshire.
The other supporter of a bear is taken from the unofficial device of three bears formerly used by Basford.
The motto is omnibus optimum – “The best for all”
