To coincide with national Anti-Slavery Day, Paddy Tipping, Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, is launching a programme of action to tackle the increasing challenge of modern day slavery.  

Modern slavery remains a largely hidden crime with the true scale of the problem unknown. However, local intelligence suggests that offences are on the increase.

A £1,000 reward is being offered to anyone who can provide information that leads to prosecution following an arson attack at a play area in Arnold. Equipment at the King George V Recreation Ground was set alight at around 1.30am on Thursday 8 September, causing £30,000 worth of damage. Gedling Borough Council is warning any would-be fly-tippers that they will be being watched thanks to the purchase of a new state of the art portable CCTV camera that will be used around the borough to catch offenders.

Gedling Borough Council is asking ex-miners to get in touch to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the closure of Gedling Colliery. The council along with the Friends of Gedling County Park and the Gedling Miners Welfare Supporters are organising a special event to be held on the 7 November at the former Gedling Miners Welfare Club and would like to invite the former pit employees to attend.

Omar Yousufazi, formerly of Roseleigh Avenue, Mapperley was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs of £1,038.50 for failing to stop his dog from barking between  March and June 2016 after the council had served a notice.

A project that helps first time buyers with a small deposit is finishing at the end of July.

The Local Lend a Hand project organised in partnership with Gedling Borough Council and Lloyds Bank helps buyers with a deposit of just 5%. Since the scheme launched in 2012, the council have had 36 successful applications but time is running out for new ones.

Following a £50,000 investment in a state of the art digital projector complete with an upgraded sound system and improved picture quality, the film programme will become a significant part of the theatre’s activities.

A revamped sensory garden for the blind will be opened by the Mayor of Gedling this week thanks to volunteers from local businesses in Carlton.

The Nottingham Building Society, Gedling Borough Council and The Blind Society, with the help from donations from local businesses, have been working together to restore a garden for the blind in Carlton Hill which will be unveiled on Friday 26 June by the Mayor of Gedling.

The members grant fund for the 2015/16 year is now open and community and voluntary groups can apply to their local councillors for help for their projects. Councillors are each allocated £1,500 to use for funding and there’s also a pot of £12,500 available borough wide.

The Gedling Book Festival will take place from Friday 12 June until Sunday 14 June at Arnot Hill House, Arnot Hill Park. For the first time the festival is being held in the iconic Arnot Hill House building in the centre of Arnot Hill Park, Arnold. Over the three days there’ll be talks from an array of local and national authors, storytelling, children’s activities and more.

Pledge to make borough breastfeeding friendly

Gedling Borough Council is pledging its support for women who choose to breastfeed at an event committing to become a breastfeeding friendly borough.

An event takes place on Wednesday 25 March between 10am and 12pm in Eagle Square, outside Wilkinsons in Arnold, which marks the council’s commitment to encourage breastfeeding.

From colliery to country park - the countdown begins

Where once there were spoil heaps and pit wheels, Gedling Borough Council has created Nottingham’s newest destination country park.

The countdown is now on for the opening of the new £1.6 million Gedling Country Park.

The park will be officially opened on Saturday 28 March at 11am by the Leader of Gedling Borough Council, John Clarke. There will be lots of free events and entertainment on the park between 10.30am and 3pm.

Nottinghamshire County Council is further underlining its commitment to libraries with a £300,000 investment in Arnold Library.

The library, in Front Street, Arnold, will reopen in the summer of 2015, with customers set to benefit from a range of improvements including solar roof panels, new windows, heating and ventilation, new shelving and an enhanced children’s library.
