Mapperley Golf Course to be protected from future housing development

Posted On : 23 November 2011 @ 16:00

Gedling Borough Council is to hold a Special Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 7 December to review key sites for where 7,200 new homes are to be built between now and 2028.

House Made of Grass Over the last two years Gedling, along with other councils in Greater Nottingham, has been considering options for how and where future housing growth could be accommodated to meet the needs of the Borough. This has included Mapperley Golf Course which was set aside for housing development in 2005.

Proposals to be submitted to the Special Cabinet meeting will now recommend that the Golf Course site should not be proposed for development and that alternative sites across the Borough should be considered instead.

Officers have also been asked to work up proposals for returning Mapperley Golf Course to the Green Belt, giving greater certainty to its long-term future as a valued open space.

Leader of the Council, Cllr John Clarke said:

Finding sites for new housing is one of the most important and one of the most difficult jobs for a local council. We need to build more homes to get our economy moving again and to accommodate the growth in our population and the increase in single person households and changing lifestyles.

We’ve had a really thorough look at developing Mapperley Golf Course and while it could generate a range of potential benefits – including the re-development of Gedling Colliery – the evidence now shows that there are other sustainable options which are more viable and more deliverable.

We’ve been saying to local people throughout this process that we hadn’t yet made a decision about the golf course, that we’d take into account what they said and that we were exploring a range of options. This is a demonstration that we mean what we say and that we are prepared to listen.

Building houses on Mapperley Golf Course has been considered on a number of occasions and by all political parties. Every time we’re looking for new sites, this one gets considered and the on-going uncertainty isn’t good for the golf club or for local residents. We’ll therefore be asking officers to work up proposals for putting the site back into the Greenbelt to put an end to this uncertainty.

This is excellent news. Mapperley Golf Club is a wonderful green site and has plenty of history. I wholly agree that other sites in the borough are more suitable for development as this will spread the building across the borough rather than concentrate development in the Nottingham conurbation bringing the problems/issues that would come with it. I hope sense & reason will prevail at the meeting on 7th December to deliver welcome relief to Mapperley Golf club and the surrounding areas.
this is great news for the local people and the wildlife that has made the site its home for the past 107 years.
This is better news. My main concern is the amount of traffic these homes would generate, especially at rush hour. I hope the proposed new sites will be more dispersed.
The move by the Gedling Council to consider returning the Mapperley Golf Course to Greenbelt is, to us, a welcome development. We certainly feel that the Council have listened to all of our concerns regarding the proposal and we are very grateful for this positive result. Thank you.
Mapperley Golf Course MUST be protected - green belt - with wonderful views - open space and wildlife. The golf course must be returned to the green belt to stop all future housing proposals for developing the area. This area MUST NOT be spoilt. We have had enough housing developments in Mapperley and it is time they stopped with immediate effect. The members of the Special Cabinet MUST find alternative sites.
This is good news for Mapperley Golf Course and the residents surrounding it. Would the Council also consider working up proposals for Dark Lane at Calverton to "return it to the green belt" so that it too, can be left out of future discussions on housing developments? Dark Lane is also a wonderful green site, is steeped in history and deserves to remain untouched by developers to be enjoyed by the residents of Calverton.
I am so pleased that the Borough Council has shown that it is capable of making sensible decisions without upsetting many of its residents and preserving a historic golf course and a green belt area for the future. .
Thank you - Cllr John Clarke - Mapperley Golf Club is a wonderful sporting facility within the Borough. If you are a local resident, active and fit, please don't just look upon the course as a green lung and wildlife area ( which it is) but join the Club and enjoy the game of golf and facilities that the Club has to offer. Membership is available to all from a junior to our active senior section.
Best decision yet, and a bonus if it is to be returned to green belt status. With a little tweeking, it could become a beautiful woodland sanctury for the people of Mapperley.
How many houses to be built on our football ground and when will we be relocated as planned by GBC and my club?
This is the best news I've had all year! It has restored my faith in our local councillors. I am so grateful to all the people who have come to this wise decision. Let's hope this beautiful space is soon returned to the Green Belt, and is safe for future generations to enjoy. I think the Top Wighay Farm, near Linby, is the best option for new build. The suggested tram extension isn't necessary as this area already has good public transport. There are good local amenities in Hucknall, and this would also provide a wide choice of housing. There would be minimal effect on the Green Belt, which is a big plus. A big thank you to all the councillors who listened to the electorate on this occasion.
Wonderful news.... To endorse an earlier comment, my main concern is the extra traffic that would be generated in a road network that is already over congested.
well done to the council to actually listen to the local community of mapperley.Common sense must have been applied. The traffic locally at peak times is horrendous and introducing a further housing development would not be good. There is locally smaller building plots about and surely they can be brought into consideration.
Does this mean you will now not have the necessary funds to finance the Colliery site with its new road? Regards L. A. Storey
Absolutely fantastic news & well done for listening to the views of the people. Putting the site back into greenbelt is fantastic too.
Good news for Mapperley Golf Course, but where does this put the borough council's green credentials? Doesn't common sense say that we should develop our derelict brownfield sites, rather than build willy-nilly over our ever diminishing green fields.......
A predictable result, but what happened to the "Country Park" idea for Gedling Colliery tip?
The comments regarding Mapperley Golf Course are typical - not in our back yard! Why should Top Wighay have to be chosen - oh I forgot - it's out of sight, out of mind. I wonder how many councillors of all three parties have been up to Top Wighay and seen the effect this development would have on Newstead Village. We are a village and wish to remain a village - not a suburb of Hucknall.
I am delighted that the proposals to build on the Mapperley Golf Course have now been decllined. This is excellent news for the residents of Mapperley & Gedling. I trust the Golf Course will now be excluded in the future from any such development and will return to green belt. This is very reassuring. Thank you.
We are delighted the council have listened.Surprised that the knock on effects of the golf course proposal were not evaluated sufficiently before the proposal was made. The predictable road congestion of the local road network was and is obvious not to mention that on local amenity the blighting of Mapperly retail businesses. Local small brownfield sites should be redeveloped for affordable housing before the green-belt is decimated.
Delighted to learn of this decision. It is good to know that this beautiful green space can now be enjoyed by all for the foreseeable future.
Well done, I am pleased with the decision not to put even more housing on the green belt.
If you live in the Mapperley area as we do you will have a good idea of how much traffic would be generated by this development. So excellent news, but the Golf Club should never have been taken off "Green Belt" status. It's good to know that our views are being listened to.
