We intend to join the growing number of local authorities across the country operating a 5-star rated ‘Food Hygiene Rating System’ for businesses in their area.
The scheme will be based on elements of the Food Standard Agency's national food hygiene rating system that includes scoring the level of hygiene, structural standard and management of the business and producing an overall hygiene score for every inspected food business.
The resulting scores are translated into star ratings, where five stars in the highest rating and zero is the lowest. The detailed protocols for the scheme can be downloaded from this page.
During the period August-November 320 local catering businesses were contacted and provided with details of the proposed Gedling scheme-we recieved 111 responses, all in support of the proposals.
One issue arising from the consultation was that a number of very small residential homes caring for less than three residents felt they should not be included in the scheme as their level of catering was so small as to be the equivalent of a domestic set up.
Several public houses and clubs raised a second issue-that some public houses and clubs change whether they provide food or not dependant upon the manager or steward. In the future operating of the scheme officers will determine if a public house or club is included on the scheme dependant on whether or not catering was taking place at the time of inspection. The Star Rating Scheme will now be rolled out in 2012.
