Welcome to the blog for Gedling Borough Council's Mayor Councillor Patricia Andrews.
Cllr Andrews, who has been a councillor for four years in the Newstead ward, will represent the council as Mayor over the next year. The Mayor’s escort will be Mr Bruce Andrews, who is her husband and borough councillor for the Ravenshead ward.
Her chosen charity is prostate cancer through the Urology department of Nottingham City Hospital.

Only two weeks left before I am no longer “Madam Mayor” – I hope the withdrawal symptoms are not too severe.

Spring has finally arrived and with it flocks of schoolchildren visiting the Civic Centre to 'meet the mayor'. Having had quite a few visits over the past few months, we have perfected a timetable for their visits, starting with a walk round the lake, feeding and identifying the ducks with plenty of help from our very able and enthusiastic rangers. Following this we all go into the Parlour for drinks and biscuits and the usual questions – and what questions!

I recently enjoyed what was probably one of the most diverse and busy I have had since becoming Mayor, starting with visits to two couples who had married on Valentine’s Day seventy – yes seventy years’ ago! They were all fairly well and cheerful and very touched that the Mayor of Gedling Borough had gone to share their special day. Both gentlemen were still members of Carlton Male Voice Choir and it was a privilege to meet them.

It was certainly worth getting up very early on a Saturday. What was? The day we stood in Sainsbury’s in Arnold and collected £362.60 for the Mayor’s Charity.

I hope everyone had a good break at Christmas and New Year. So far we seem to avoided ice and snow and snowdrops are already pushing their way up. Visiting Devon recently, I saw a rose bush still with flowers – that did seem a bit unnatural. Global warming is still very much an issue although after the last two winters I did begin to wonder.

The deputy and I have switched on the tree lights in Arnold and Mapperly and a Christmas market at the Richard Herrod Centre had a lovely atmosphere and lots of gifts to buy.

11 am on 11th November 2011 – an auspicious time for everyone and at Gedling Borough Council we marked it with a short service and wreath-laying at the war memorial in the park. Darren Gilder, a senior neighbourhood warden, and former soldier, proudly wore his medals and laid the wreath on behalf of all staff.

Saturday morning was spent in Wilkinsons in Arnold helping the Borough Council’s good friends from the British Legion sell poppies – this year is their 90th celebratory year.
