About the Council

Gedling Borough

Established in 1974, the Borough of Gedling is home to almost 112,000 people and covers an area of 46.3 sq. miles.

Set in the rolling Nottinghamshire countryside, it includes the towns of Arnold and Carlton and the surrounding parishes.

It borders Sherwood Forest to the north, the River Trent to the southeast and the City of Nottingham to the southwest.

Gedling Borough has much to offer both residents and visitors, from heritage to modern community facilities in addition to suburban settlements with excellent shopping and leisure facilities, tranquil villages and picturesque countryside.

The vibrant city of Nottingham is within easy reach for shopping and nightlife.

The Borough is close to both the A1 and M1, while main line rail services and national bus routes are available in nearby Nottingham.

An excellent network of local buses also serves the area and the Robin Hood Railway has enhanced the north-south link within the county, particularly benefiting Newstead and the former coalfield area.

Industry and Employment

The Borough is home to around two and half thousand businesses and by far the largest concentrations of employment are located on the Victoria Park Retail Development and Colwick Industrial Estate.

Gedling’s main employment is in public administration and health, distribution and manufacturing.

As key sources of employment in the Borough, local manufacturing industries include pressurised gas vessel construction, hosiery, mechanical handling equipment, pre-cast concrete fabrications, pet foods and timber products.

Unemployment in the Borough remains consistently low, while the highly skilled local workforce and their positive approach to learning continues to be an attraction for business.

Education

The Borough’s seven secondary schools are organised as comprehensive schools and all have sixth forms.  Each is fed by a ‘family’ of primary schools, to provide continuity of schooling from age 5 through to 16 and beyond.

Further information about schools in the Borough can be obtained from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Area Education Office.
