Local Authorities have engaged in a modernisation process for service delivery to citizens and, where possible, interact with citizens by electronic means.

The National e-Government modernisation process ran from 2001 until 2005 and in support of the initiative Councils were required to report progress to Central Government using Implementing Electronic Government Statements.

Transformational Government

‘enabled by technology’

In November 2005 the Government published proposals for Transformational Government the major themes of which are:

• The transformation of public services for the benefit of citizens, businesses, taxpayers and front-line staff
• The efficiency of the corporate services and infrastructure of government organizations thus freeing resources for the front-line
• The steps necessary to achieve the effective delivery of technology for government
