The Council has adopted a standardized logo to publicise all waste management activities throughout the Borough. S.M.A.R.T. Recycling was officially launched at the Arnold Carnival in 2004.
Recycling household waste helps the environment by saving natural resources and reducing the amount of waste for disposal. However it would be better if more people made a conscious effort to support recycling by purchasing products made from recycled material.
So buy recycled and close the recycling loop.
Separate your waste for recycling and choose to buy products made from recycled material.
This will help set up strong markets for materials collected in your local recycling schemes and encourage retail stores to stock more recycled products.
However small your purchase you can make a difference.
Please SLIM YOUR BIN - always use the recycling facilities.
Oxfam can turn unwanted mobile phones and their accessories into money to support work with people all over the world. On average, each working donated handset is worth £5 to Oxfam - but some are worth much more. Donating a Nokia 3310 for example, could enable Oxfam to provide a mosquito net to protect a child from malaria.
You can take your personal handset or a mobile phone collection in your school or office to any Oxfam shop. If you are donating fewer than 10 phones, you can send them to:
Oxfam Bring Scheme,
Freepost LON16281,
London.
W5 5BR.
If you are donating more than 10 phones, please call 0870-752-0999 to arrange a courier.
Note: Please remove SIM cards before donating your phone.
Due to the positive response from the public, the demand for further recycling services has increased. Current legislation has also increased the need to reduce, reuse and recycle the waste that is produced by each household. A second wheeled bin is used for recycling paper, card, cans and plastic. Glass is collected using a box on alternate weeks.
The programme for twin bins started in December 2003 with a trial to some homes and following this started to be rolled out to other areas in June 2004 with the majority of homes receiving the service by the end of 2006.
For more information please see the Twin Bin Scheme web page.
