NEWS ON YOUR GLASS COLLECTION AND CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR ARRANGEMENTS

You should receive your new Refuse and Recycling Guide which includes your new Twin Bin Calendar by early December, please note to make it even easier to remember to put your glass box out we will now collect it on the same day as your green bin in most cases.  Please check your new calendar for this information and the changes to all collections during Christmas week.

Twin Bin Scheme

The Twin Bin Scheme has now been extended to the majority of properties in the Borough, including the more difficult to serve homes with either communal bins or storage issues.  Please look out for Twin Bin information that is delivered to your house, in the Contacts magazine, on this website and in the local newspapers, as this will keep you up-to-date with any changes.

The council has adopted a standardised logo to publicise all waste management activities throughout the Borough.  SMART is the acronym of Sorting Materials Allows Recycling Tomorrow which will be placed on promotional material as well as the refuse freighters.  We are encouraging residents in the Borough to act S.M.A.R.T. be S.M.A.R.T.

Residents are encouraged to raise any issues regarding recycling at the various events we attend through the year, including the Arnold Carnival and the Gedling Show on contact customer services on 0115 901 3621.

How does the scheme work?

Your green bin for recycling paper, card, cans, plastics bottles, margarine tubs and yoghurt pots will be collected one week and your existing grey bin for other rubbish will be collected on the same day the following week. The box for glass will be collected on a separate day every two weeks.

Why are we using this system?

Sending rubbish to landfill sites is not a sustainable, environmentally friendly or cheap form of waste disposal.

Central Government has introduced targets for local councils to take less waste to landfill sites.

Well done Gedling has achieved a recycling rate of 35.69% in 2006/07 and maintained the rate in 2007/08 despite having 12 weeks of weekly black bin collections.

Gedling has chosen to expand the Twin Bin scheme to increase recycling and to sustain the local environment to pass on to future generations.

These items can go into the green bin:

Cans / Tins PlasticPaperCardboard
Food tins Drinks bottlesBrochures and CataloguesCardboard packaging
Drinks cans Household bottles - washing up, bleach, fabric conditioner, cooking oilGreetings cardsCorrugated card
Aerosol cans Shampoo or toiletry bottlesEnvelopes including window onesCereal packets
Margarine tubsJunk mail, leafletsEgg boxes
Yogurt potsNewspapers
Shredded paper
Telephone directories
Writing paper

Please remember to rinse out food containers as food residue will contaminate a load and may cause your bin to smell.  We recommend you do this when you do your washing up.

Bulky Cardboard

Large amounts of cardboard in the green bin can be very bulky so please break it up before placing into the bin.  If you have large amounts of cardboard, for example packaging from a new kitchen or flat pack furniture, please contact customer services on 0115 901 3621 or alternatively email waste@gedling.gov.uk

These items CANNOT go in your green bin:

These items will contaminate your green bin and should be disposed of with your general refuse or where acceptable at our recycling centres.  Although we endeavour to check green bins to ensure that they are not contaminated, putting the wrong items in can lead to an entire vehicle load being rejected and sent to landfill.  For more information or advice on accepted green bin materials please contact the recycling team on 0115 9013621 or alternatively email recycling@gedling.gov.uk.

Glass

A box has been provided for you to store glass bottles and jars. The idea of a box is to make it easier for you to recycle glass at the kerbside. We should appreciate it if you would remove the lids and tops from bottles.

Please be considerate to our collection crews. and do not fill the boxes above lid level.  If you find that you have too many bottles and jars for the box, please use bags and leave them next to it so that it is not overflowing.  If you often have too much glass for one box, please contact us so we can arrange another one. Thank you.

Leaflet from Nottinghamshire County Council

You may have recently received a leaflet from the County Council entitled 'Are you Bin Smart?' and may be confused by the content of this leaflet.  We have amended this website with the information in their publication.  We had already planned to provide the updated list of acceptable recycling materials when we deliver your new refuse and recycling calendar in late November/early December.  We didn't want to overload you with duplicate information.   Apologies for any confusion the Notts County Council leaflet may have caused.

What happens if I put the wrong material into my green bin?

Our collection crews will be checking the green bins before they are emptied to make sure that the materials are correct.  If you have put in any wrong items stated above you will receive a warning card and the bin will not be emptied. If the item(s) is removed the bin will be emptied within three working days. If a householder continues to contaminate the green bin, they will receive a visit from the Recycling team to discuss any problems. In line with the Council's 'Slim your bin' policy, no side waste will be taken from the grey bin.

Nappies

Residents using Twin Bin that have small children may want to try using the Notts Nappy Project. Instead of using disposable nappies that take 500 years to rot in landfill sites, the project promotes the use of re-usable cotton nappies.

Summer Tips

Studies from other councils and a report by Nottinghamshire County Council have shown that alternate week collections do not pose a risk to public health providing that you follow our advice. We are aware that residents are concerned about the warmer months leading to smells and we will do our best to monitor the situation.

Please be aware of good housekeeping practices:

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to the things we recycle?

The materials that you put in the green bin are sorted at a materials recycling facility. This is then packaged up and sent to manufacturers who will then use it to make new objects. The glass that is collected is taken to a local company which processes it into new bottles, jars and road construction materials.

Why do we collect the glass box and the green bin on different days?

At the moment, collecting both containers on the same day is not possible due to the way that all kerbside rounds are organised. We hope to make it possible for people to put their green bin and glass box out together in the future.

Why aren't carrier bags and polystyrene accepted?

It is not effective or cost efficient to recycle these materials. Consequently, the contractor that sorts our green bin materials will not accept them.  You could re-use carrier bags many times, wrap food waste or refuse in them and use your own bag when you go shopping.

I have too much glass to fit in my box and too much cardboard for my bin!

Great! But please don't fill the box so that it is overflowing. If you have too much, leave it in carrier bags at the side of the box or take it to your local recycling centre. You may leave large pieces of card that are too big for your bin by the side and we will take it away but please let us know before the collection day - 0115 901 3621.

Why do we need so many bins?

Rather than putting all your recyclable materials into separate bags and taking them to a recycling centre, another bin makes it easier for everybody to recycle. In line with the contracts set up by Nottinghamshire County Council, we can now supply our recyclable materials to them co-mingled. This is partly the reason why your green bin allows you to mix the materials apart from the separate box for glass.

My grey bin is too big! Can I have a smaller one?

Of course you can! If you are finding that the 'normal' grey bin takes up too much space and you feel that you could cope with a slightly smaller bin which is easier to handle, we will exchange it for you. Please telephone customer services on 0115 901 3621 to arrange this.

But rubbish isn't my problem - It's your job!

Everyone is responsible for the waste they generate. Yes, the Council does have an obligation to remove household waste for you but the Council is now expected to use its powers to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and to collect recyclable materials separately. By re-using materials today we will be conserving resources for future generations.
