Air pollution in Gedling is a very important issue and one of public concern. Everybody has the right to clean air, it is therefore essential that air quality and pollution be strictly controlled, managed and monitored.
The National Air Quality Strategy 1997 was established to control and protect air quality in the United Kingdom. Air Quality Standards were created for eight main air pollutants that are known to harm human health and measures to be taken to deliver cleaner air through a process of Local Air Quality Management (LAQM). (Ozone one of the eight pollutants is now managed nationally due to its trans boundary nature).
This document was replaced in July 2007 with a new strategy document; this latest strategy does not remove any of the objectives set out in the previous strategy or its addendum, apart from replacing the provisional 2010 PM10 objective in England, Wales and Northern Ireland with the exposure reduction approach. The strategy introduces a new ozone objective to protect ecosystems, in line with the EU target value set out in the Third Daughter Directive.

Due to the cross-boundary nature of air pollution, Gedling Borough Council is continuing to co-ordinate its process of Local Air Quality Management with its neighbouring authorities. This joint working policy progressed further in April 2008 with the launch of the new Nottinghamshire Air Quality Strategy, which has been endorsed by all Nottinghamshire local authorities, County Council, Environment Agency, Highways Agency and Health Protection Agency.
