Finance Department

The Finance Department is the top performing authority in Nottinghamshire for the collection of Council Tax with a current rate of 98.4 per cent.

The team recognises the need to collect this money to help provide for vital public services ranging from housing repairs and road improvements to supporting parish councils.

Each year it also collects money from borough tax payers for Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire County Council and this year has a duty to collect in the region of £45.4m.

As well as collecting the Council Tax, Business Rates and handling Housing Benefit, the department also manages the concessionary fares bus pass scheme.

Based at the Civic Centre, its officers deal with the council’s payments and prepare and advise on the annual budget for the council to help plan what each department has to spend each year.

With a staff of 92 people, the authority is also among the top 25 per cent of local authorities in terms of accurately processing benefits and collecting business rates.

People in the Borough should be aware that men aged over 60 are now eligible for a bus pass which offers half fare concessions.

The Finance Department recently launched an automated telephone system for people to pay their council tax and rent by debit card at any time of the day or night, 365 days a year.

Another emerging trend is the use of the Internet to pay bills with 2,000 payments made already.
