For all other enquiries, please contact our Benefits section at the Civic Centre on (0115) 901 3970, email housingbenefits@gedling.gov.uk or visit our Making a Claim page for more information.
Claims for backdated benefit can only be made where there is good reason for not applying at an earlier date and where that reason lasts for the whole period claimed. Please note that the following do not amount to good reason:
Providing there is good reason to do so, claims for Housing and Council Tax Benefit payments can be backdated for a maximum of up to six months before the date of your application's written receipt.
If you have reach the age to claim Pension Credit then your benefit can be backdated for a maximum of up to three months without showing good reason.
Housing or Council Tax Benefit is normally awarded from the Monday following written receipt of your application.
Applications to backdate benefit can be made using the form included in the backdate leaflet or simply write to us confirming the date you wish you benefit to start from and explaining the reason for not claiming earlier.
To avoid delay, please ensure you provide all necessary supporting evidence for the period of your backdated claim. We may need to contact you if the relevant evidence is not provided.
Once your application is received, a decision will be made based on the information you provide. We will then notify you of our decision, as well as your right to appeal. Please visit our Appeals page for more information about your right to appeal.
