Why do I need a bank account?

You will need to open a bank account to receive payments of state benefit and Local Housing Allowance (LHA) as these are processed using the Bacs payment method, which are usually quicker, cheaper and more secure than payments made by cheque. (External site)

How do I open a basic bank account?

This kind of account is available from all major banks and building societies. To open an account you will need to provide proof of your identity and address.

The following are examples of the documents accepted as proof of identity and address. However, please note that no single document is accepted as proof of both your identity and address. Where 'recent' documents are required, these must be dated within the last four months.

Current National Identity Card Recent Utility or Telephone Bill
IND Application Registration Card issued by the Home Office Recent Tenancy Agreement from the council or another reputable letting agency
