In some cases, the same document can be used as proof of both your identity and National Insurance number.

What can I provide as proof?

Listed alphabetically below are examples of documents you could supply.

This is not a full list and any other documents that you have that have your name, address, date of birth or photograph on them may also be acceptable.

Can I send photocopies?

No, the documents you supply must always be originals.

We have special equipment and procedures to check the documents are genuine. We do not advise people to send important documents through the post. If you have difficulty bringing the documents to either the Arnold or Carlton offices, the addresses are shown below, someone can visit you in your home.

What if I don’t have the documents I need?

You should still complete and return your application form. Benefit usually starts from the Monday after receipt of the application form so any delay could result in loss of benefit.
