How are benefit payments made?

We use Bacs bank transfer to make benefit payments into claimants' bank accounts, as this is generally quicker, cheaper and more secure than making payments by cheque. (External site)

To receive benefit payments, you will need to open a bank account. If you wish to open an account for the purposes of receiving benefit, please visit our Basic Bank Accounts page.

When are benefit payments made?

Benefit payments are normally awarded from the Monday following written receipt of your application, with Council Tax Benefit being paid directly onto your council tax account once your claim is processed.

If you qualify for Local Housing Allowance, however, then we make payments on a fortnightly-basis by direct bank transfer. Payments are normally processed two weeks in arrears.

Please note that you may be entitled to claim benefit from before the date of your application providing you have 'good reason' to do so. For more information, please visit our Backdated Claims page.

Who are benefit payments made to?

Payments for new Housing Benefit claims will be made direct to the claimant for as long as they are entitled, except in a small number of cases where the individual is vulnerable or unable to manage their own rent.

In this case, you may request for benefit to be made direct to your landlord. Please visit our Advice for Landlords page for more information.

OPENGedling
