Do I have grounds for appeal?

Grounds for appeal concerning changes to your property's banding valuation are restricted to the following cases:

In the case of material increases, appeals will not be considered until after a sale, usually following an appeal from the new owner or resident. However, a revaluation will take place as soon as possible where a material reduction applies.

Making an appeal

If you have valid grounds and wish to make an appeal, you may do so by appealing direct to the Council or by appealing to the Local Taxation Section.

Please note that making an appeal does not allow you to withhold payment in the meantime. If your appeal is successful you will be entitled to a refund of any overpaid amount.

You can appeal to our Council Tax Office if you feel you are not liable for paying council tax because:

Appeals made direct to us must be made in writing to our Council Tax Office at the Civic Centre.

As well as appealing direct to the Council, you are also entitled to make a written appeal to the Valuation Office Agency.

If you believe your property to be in the wrong valuation band, you can make your appeal in writing to the Listing Officer at the local Valuation Office. (External site)
