1. Population

Resident Population

The 2001 Census shows that the resident population of Bestwood Village is 1,655 (1.49% of the Borough’s population). This makes Bestwood Village the least populated of the 22 wards in Gedling. The population is split by gender as follows: - 49% male and 51% female

The Mid-term estimate for June 2004 gives a resident population of 1,745 (1.6% of the Borough's population) which still makes Bestwood Village the least populated ward.  The population gender split is estimated as 47.7% male and 52.3% female.

Age

The average age of a person living in Bestwood Village is 43.1 years, compared to an average age in Gedling Borough of 40.1. This gives the Ward the fifth oldest average population of the 22 Wards in the Borough. Nearly one fifth (17%) of Bestwood Village’s population is under sixteen. 55.2% of the population are between the ages of 16 and 60, and 27.8% are 60 and over (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Ethnicity

96.08% of Bestwood Village’s population is either White British or White Irish. This means that 3.92% of the population are from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) group, accounting for 1.39% (58 residents) of the Borough’s total BME population. This gives Bestwood the eighteenth largest BME population in Gedling Borough.

The Black and Minority Ethnic population is split to reveal that 0.24% is White Other, 1.45% is of Mixed heritage; 1.75% is Asian or Asian British; 0.03% is Black or Black British; and 0.18% is either Chinese or from another Ethnic group (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Religion

As measured in the 2001 Census, 74.3% of Bestwood Village’s population is Christian. People from other faith groups make up 2.4 % of the ward population. This is higher than the 1.8% of people from other faith groups that make up the population of Gedling Borough as a whole.  As much as 16.8% of the population stated that they have no religion. Marital Status

As measured in the 2001 Census, the vast majority (58.3%) of Bestwood Village’s population is married or re-married. 21.6% of the population is single. The married or re-married percentage of the population on Bestwood Village is therefore higher than across the whole of the Borough, while the single percentage of the population is lower (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Health

In 2005 Bestwood Village had a birth rate of 43.011 per 1000 women aged 15 to 44. This gave Bestwood Village the eighteenth highest birth rate in Gedling (Source: Gedling PCT, 2007).

Bestwood Village had an average death rate of 1085.55 per 100,000 population between 2001 and 2003. This gave Bestwood Village the highest death rate in Gedling (Source: Gedling PCT, 2005).

For 2005 Bestood Village had an average female life expectancy of 74.5 years, which is the lowest level of female life expectancy in the borough. The average male life expectancy is 73.8 years, the twentieth highest male life expectancy out of the 22 Wards.  (Source: Gedling PCT, 2007).

In February 2007 there were 140 residents in Bestwood Village receiving Disability Living Allowance. This gave Bestwood Village the eighteenth highest number of claimants in the Borough (Source: Department for Work and Pensions 2007).

In February 2007 there were 15 residents in Bestwood Village receiving Severe Disablement Allowance. This gave Bestwood Village the seventeenth highest number of claimants in the Borough (Source: Department for Work and Pensions 2007).

The 2001 Census shows that within Bestwood Village 416 individuals declared they had a limiting long-term illness, giving a percentage of 25.14% which is the highest percentage in the Borough.(Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Household

According to the 2001 Census there are 683 households in Bestwood Village. Of these 485 are one-family households, 169 are one-person households and 29 are other households. One family households are broken down into 293 Married Couple households, 56 Cohabiting Couple Family households, 52 Lone Parent households and 84 Pensioner households (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

2. Employment

Unemployment

As at December 2006 there were 10 residents in Bestwood Village registered as unemployed. This represents 1% of the total ward population. The unemployment rate is lower in Bestwood Village than it is across the Borough as a whole where an average of 1.8% of the total population is unemployed.

The number of unemployed people in Bestwood Village over the last six months has remained generally static at 11, with a small decline in December 2006. The trend was punctuated by a rise in August 2006 to 18(Source: Nottinghamshire County Council).

4 Crime Figures

The figures show incidents of crime remained at 10 per 1,000 population or below from October 2005 through to June 2006.  However an increase was seen in July to 40 and September to 50 per 1,000 population, peaks during these months were also seen in all Wards within the Borough, but levels returned to the lower rates in August and October 2006.
