1. Population

Resident Population

The 2001 Census shows that the resident population of Calverton is 6,903 (6.18% of the Borough’s population). This makes Calverton the fifth most populated of the 22 wards in Gedling Borough. The population is split by gender as follows: - 49% male and 51% female

The Mid-year estimate for June 2004 gives a resident population of 6,836 (6.1% of the Borough's population) which now makes Calverton the sixth most populated ward.  The population gender split is estimated as 48.9% male and 51.1% female.

Age

The average age of a person living in Calverton is 39.8 years, compared to an average age in Gedling Borough of 40.1. This gives the Ward the fourteenth oldest average population of the 22 Wards in the Borough. Nearly one fifth (19.6%) of Calverton’s population is under sixteen. 58.8% of the population are between the ages of 16 and 60, and 21.6% are 60 and over. (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Ethnicity

98.49% of Calverton’s population is either White British or White Irish. This means that 1.51% of the population are from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) group, and accounts for 1.32% (55 residents) of the Borough’s total BME population. This gives Calverton the twentieth largest BME population in Gedling Borough.

The BME population is split to reveal that 0.36% is of mixed heritage; 0.23% is Asian or Asian British; 0.04% is Black or Black British; and 0.12% is either Chinese or from another Ethnic group. (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Religion

As measured in the 2001 Census, 77.8% of Calverton’s population is Christian. People from other faith groups make up 0.6% of the ward population. This is higher than the 1.8% of people from other faith groups that make up the population of Gedling Borough as a whole.  As much as 15.2% of the population stated that they have no religion. Marital Status

As measured in the 2001 Census, the vast majority (57.6%) of Calverton’s population is married or re-married. 23.0% of the population is single. The married or re-married percentage of the population on Calverton is therefore higher than across the whole of the Borough, while the single percentage of the population is lower.(Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Health

In 2005 Calverton had a birth rate of 43.997 per 1000 women aged 15 to 44. This gave Calverton the sixteenth highest birth rate in Gedling Borough. (Source: Gedling PCT, 2007).

Calverton had an average death rate of 745.41 per 100,000 population between 2001 and 2003. This gave Calverton the fifth highest death rate in Gedling Borough. (Source: Gedling PCT).

For 2005 Calverton had an average female life expectancy  of 79.1 years which is the eighteenth highest level of female life expectancy in the Borough.  The average male life expectancy is 76.1 which is the twelfth highest male life expectancy out of the 22 wards.  (Source: Gedling PCT 2007).

In February 2007 there were 375 residents in Calverton receiving Disabled Living Allowance. This gave Calverton the highest number of claimants in the Borough (Source: Department for Work and Pensions)

In February 2007 there were 40 residents in Calverton receiving Severe Disablement Allowance. This gave Calverton the equal highest number of claimants in the Borough (Source: Department for Work and Pensions).

The 2001 Census shows that within Calverton 1,390 individuals declared they had a limiting long-term illness, giving a percentage of 20.14% which is the seventh highest percentage in the Borough.  (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Household

According to the 2001 Census there are 2771 households in Calverton. Of these 2007 are one family households, 641 are one person households and 123 are other households. 2. Employment

Unemployment

As of  December 2006 there were 58 residents in Calverton registered as unemployed. This represents 1.4% of the total Ward population. The rate of unemployment in Calverton is therefore slightly lower than it is across the whole of the Borough (1.8%). There has been a general trend of decreasing unemployment during the 6 months in the Ward until the last two months when it increased during November and December 2006 to finish the year at 58 from its initial peak of 70 in July 2006.

4 Crime Figures

The figures show incidents of crime remained between 5 and 10 per 1,000 of population from October 2006 through to June 2006.  However, an increase was seen in July to 29 and in September to 40 per 1,000 population, peaks during these months are also seen in all Wards within the Borough, but levels returned to the lower rates in August and October 2006.
