1. Population

Resident Population

The 2001 Census shows that the resident population of Carlton Hill is 7,204 (6.44% of the Borough’s population). This makes Carlton Hill the most populated of the 22 wards in Gedling. The population is split by gender as follows: - 49% male and 51% female. The mid year estimate for June 2004 gives a resident population of 7,154 (6.4% of the Borough's population) and remains the most populated ward.  The population gender split is estimated as 49% male and 51% female.

Age

The average age of a person living in Carlton Hill’s is 38.0 years, compared to an average age in Gedling Borough of 40.1. This gives the Ward the nineteenth oldest average population of the 22 Wards in the Borough. Over one fifth (20.1%) of Carlton Hill’s population is under sixteen. 60.0% of the population are between the ages of 16 and 60, and 19.8% are 60 and over. (Source: ONS, Census 2001)

Ethnicity

91.65% of Carlton Hill’s population is either White British or White Irish. This means that 8.35% of the population are from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) group, and accounts for 11.36% (475 residents) of the Borough’s total BME population. This gives Carlton Hill the largest BME population in Gedling Borough.

Religion

As measured in the 2001 Census, 67.8% of Carlton Hill’s population is Christian. People from other faith groups make up 2.2 % of the ward population. This is higher than the 1.8% of people from other faith groups that make up the population of Gedling Borough as a whole.  As much as 21% of the population stated that they have no religion (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Marital Status

As measured in the 2001 Census, the vast majority (48.7%) of Carlton Hill’s population is married or re-married. 32.4% of the population is single. The married or re-married percentage of the population on Carlton Hill is therefore lower than across the whole of the Borough, while the single percentage of the population is higher. Health

In 2005 Carlton Hill had a birth rate of 64.895 per 1000 women aged 15 to 44. This gave Carlton Hill the highest birth rate in Gedling. (Source: Gedling PCT, 2007).

Carlton Hill had an average death rate of 626.99 per 100,000 population between 2001 and 2003. This gave Carlton Hill the eleventh highest death rate in Gedling. Borough. (Source: Gedling PCT).

For 2005 Carlton Hill had an average female life expectancy of 81.7 years which is the twelth highest level of female life expectancy in the Borough.  The average male life expectancy is 77.1 years which is the eighth highest male life expectancy out of the 22 wards. (Source: Gedling PCT, 2007).

In February 2007 there were 350 residents in Carlton Hill receiving Disabled Living Allowance. This gave Carlton the fourth highest number of claimants in the Borough. (Source: Department of Work and Pensions).

The 2001 Census shows that within Carlton Hill 1,243 individuals declared they had a limiting long-term illness, giving a percentage of 17.25% which is the seventh highest percentage in the Borough.  (Source ONS, Census 2001).

Household

According to the 2001 Census there are 3103 households in Carlton Hill. Of these 2013 are one family households, 923 are one person households and 167 are other households. One family households are broken down in to 1072 Married Couple households, 351 Cohabiting Couple Family households, 326 Lone Parent households and 264 Pensioner households. 2. Employment

Unemployment

As of December 2006 there were 86 residents in Carlton Hill registered as unemployed. This represents 1.9% of the total Ward population. The rate of unemployment in Carlton Hill is therefore slightly higher than across the whole of the Borough (1.8%). There was a slight increase in the unemployment levels during the last six months but the period has ended at a lower figure than it began from 91 in July 2006  to 86 in December 2006.

4. Crime Figures

The figures show incidents of crime remained at 10 or below per 1,000 population from October 2005 through to June 2006.  However, an increase was seen in July to 39 and in September to 50 per 1,000 population, peaks during these months are also seen in all Wards within the Borough, but levels returned to the lower rates in August and October 2006.
