1. Population

Resident Population

The 2001 Census shows that the resident population of Gedling Ward is 6,758 (6.05% of the Borough’s population). This makes Gedling Ward the tenth most populated of the 22 wards in Gedling. The population is split by gender as follows: - 48% male and 52% female.

Age

The average age of a person living in Gedling Ward is 42.3 years, compared to an average age in Gedling Borough of 40.1. This gives the Ward the seventh oldest average population of the 22 Wards in the Borough. Nearly one fifth (18.9%) of Gedling Ward’s population is under sixteen. 55.1% of the population are between the ages of 16 and 60, and 26.1% are 60 and over. (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Ethnicity

96.25% of Gedling ward’s population is either White British or White Irish. This means that 3.75% of the population are from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) group, and accounts for 4.21% (176 residents) of the Borough’s total BME population. This gives Gedling ward the ninth largest BME population in Gedling Borough.

Religion

As measured in the 2001 Census, 73% of Gedling ward’s population is Christian. People from other faith groups make up 1.3% of the ward population. This is lower than the 1.8% of people from other faith groups that make up the population of Gedling Borough as a whole.  As much as 18.1% of the population stated that they have no religion. Marital Status

As measured in the 2001 Census, the vast majority (55.8%) of Gedling Ward’s population is married or re-married. 23.9% of the population is single. The married or re-married percentage of the population on Gedling Ward is therefore higher than across the whole of the Borough, while the single percentage of the population is lower. Health

In 2005 Gedling Ward had a birth rate of 50.539 per 1000 women aged 15 to 44. This gave Gedling Ward the tenth highest birth rate in Gedling (Source: Gedling PCT, 2007).

Gedling Ward had an average death rate of 779.28 per 100,000 population between 2001 and 2003. This gave Gedling Ward the fourth highest death rate in Gedling. (Gedling PCT).

Life Expectancy

For 2005 Gedling Ward had an average female life expectancy of 79.7 years which is the seventeenth highest level of female life expectancy in the Borough.  The average male life expectancy is 74.3 which Is the nineteenth highest male life expectancy out of the 22 wards. (Source: Gedling PCT 2007).

In February 2007 there were 290 residents in Gedling Ward receiving Disabled Living Allowance. This gave Gedling Ward the ninth highest number of claimants in the Borough. (Source: Department for Work and Pensions).

In February 2007 there were 25 residents in Gedling Ward receiving Severe Disablement Allowance. This gave Gedling Ward the twelfth highest number of claimants in the Borough .(Source: Department for Work and Pensions).

The 2001 Census shows that within Gedling Ward 1,381 individuals declared they had a limiting long-term illness, giving a percentage of 20.44% which is the seventeenth highest percentage in the Borough.  (Source ONS, Census 2001).

According to the 2001 Census there are 2696 households in Gedling ward. Of these 1889 are one family households, 657 are one person households and 150 are other households. One family households are broken down in to 1121 Married Couple households, 240 Cohabiting Couple Family households, 207 Lone Parent households and 321 Pensioner households. 2. Employment

Unemployment

As of December 2006 there were 50 residents in Gedling Ward registered as unemployed. This represents 1.3% of the total Ward population. Unemployment rate is lower in Gedling Ward than it is across the Borough as a whole where 1.8% of the total population is unemployed. Unemployment has not changed significantly over the last six months, there was a general decrease in unemployment to a lowest figure of 39 during September, but then began increasing each month, but remained below the level it began the period at 55 individuals.

4. Crime Figures

The figures show incidents of crime remained under 10 per 1,000 for the majority of period from October through to June 2006.  However, an increase was seen in July to 40 and in September  to 56 per 1,000, peaks during these months are also seen in all wards within the Borough, but levels returned to the lower rates in August and October 2006.
