3. Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD)

The Indices of Multiple Deprivation are measured across geographical areas called Super Output Areas (SOA). Each SOA is ranked nationally by a deprivation score for each of the following themes – Income, Employment, Health Deprivation and Disability, Education, Skills and Training, Barriers to Housing and Services, Crime, and Living Environment. The scores obtained by each SOA for all seven themes are then combined to give an overall IMD score.

SOA’s are used to breakdown Wards according to the size of their population. It is therefore possible for Wards to constitute one or numerous SOA’s. For example, in Gedling the Bestwood Village Ward has just one SOA, whilst the Carlton Hill Ward has five. In Gedling there are 77 SOA's throughout the 22 Wards. The links below provide lists ranking the 77 Gedling SOA's for over all Indices of Multiple Deprivation and each of the seven individual themes. To view the tables in a separate window right click on the link you require and select 'Open in New Window':

IMD information has also been produced at Borough level. For overall IMD, Gedling ranks as the 184th most deprived out of a total of 354 local authority areas in England. In addition, Gedling ranks 186th for income and 163rd for employment. The table below shows a comparison between Gedling and the local authority areas of Broxtowe, Rushcliffe and Nottingham City:
