The Indices of Multiple Deprivation are measured across geographical areas called Super Output Areas (SOA). Each SOA is ranked nationally by a deprivation score for each of the following themes – Income, Employment, Health Deprivation and Disability, Education, Skills and Training, Barriers to Housing and Services, Crime, and Living Environment. The scores obtained by each SOA for all seven themes are then combined to give an overall IMD score.
SOA’s are used to breakdown Wards according to the size of their population. It is therefore possible for Wards to constitute one or numerous SOA’s.
