1. Population

Resident Population

The 2001 Census shows that the resident population of Netherfield and Colwick is 7,042 (6.30% of the Borough’s population). This makes Netherfield and Colwick the second most populated of the 22 wards in Gedling. The mid-year estimate for June 2004 gives a resident population of 7,049 (6.3% of the Borough’s population) and is the second most populated ward.  The population gender split is estimated as 48.2% male and 51.8% female.

Age

The average age of a person living in Netherfield and Colwick is 34.3 years, compared to an average age in Gedling Borough of 40.1. This gives the Ward the youngest average population of the 22 Wards in the Borough. Over one fifth (21.4%) of Netherfield and Colwick’s population is under sixteen. 64.9% of the population are between the ages of 16 and 60, and 13.7% are 60 and over.(Source: ONS, Census 2001)

Ethnicity

95.33% of Netherfield and Colwick’s population is either White British or White Irish. This means that 4.67% of the population are from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) group, and accounts for 6.08% (254 residents) of the Borough’s total BME population. This gives Netherfield and Colwick the seventh largest BME population in Gedling Borough.

The BME population is split to reveal that 1.25% is of Mixed heritage; 1.21% is Asian or Asian British; 0.6% is Black or Black British; and 0.53% is either Chinese or from another Ethnic group (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Religion

As measured in the 2001 Census, 62.8% of Netherfield and Colwick’s population is Christian. People from other faith groups make up 1.9% of the ward population. This is higher than the 1.8% of people from other faith groups that make up the population of Gedling Borough as a whole.  As much as 26.7% of the population stated that they have no religion (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Marital Status

As measured in the 2001 Census, a slight majority (41.0%) of Netherfield and Colwick’s population is married or re-married. 38.7% of the population is single. The married or re-married percentage of the population in Mapperley Plains is therefore lower than across the whole of the Borough, whilst the single percentage of the population is higher. Health

• Birth Rate
  In 2005 Netherfield and Colwick had a birth rate of 52.902 per 1000 women aged 15 to 44. This gave Netherfield and Colwick the sixth highest birth rate in Gedling. (Source: Gedling PCT, 2007).

• Death Rate
  Netherfield and Colwick had an average death rate of 711.54 per 100,000 population between 2001 and 2003. This gave Netherfield and Colwick the sixth highest death rate in Gedling (Source: Gedling PCT).

• Life Expectancy
  For 2005 Netherfield and Colwick had an average female life expectancy of 79 years which is the nineteenth highest level of female life expectancy in the Borough.  The average male life expectancy is 71.9 years which is the lowest male life expectancy out of the 22 wards.  (Source:  Gedling PCT, 2007).

• Disabled Residents
• In February 2007 there were 340 residents in Netherfield and Colwick receiving Disabled Living Allowance. This gave Netherfield and Colwick the sixth highest number of claimants in the Borough. (Source: Department for Work and Pensions).
• In February 2007 there were 30 residents in Netherfield and Colwick receiving Severe Disablement Allowance. This gave Netherfield and Colwick the eighth highest number of claimants in the Borough. (Source: Department for Work and Pensions).

The 2001 Census shows that within Netherfield and Colwick 1,146 individuals declared they had a limiting long-term illness, giving a percentage of 16.27% which is the third highest percentage in the Borough.  (Source: ONS Census 2001).

Household

According to the 2001 Census there are 3268 households in Netherfield and Colwick. Of these 2001 are one family households, 1094 are one person households and 173 are other households. 2. Employment

Unemployment

As of December 2006 there were 121 residents in Netherfield and Colwick registered as unemployed. This represents 2.6% of the total Ward population. Unemployment rate is higher in Netherfield and Colwick than it is across the Borough as a whole where 1.8% of the total population is unemployed. 4.Crime Figures

The figures show incidents of crime remained between 10 and 20 per 1,000 population from October 2005 through to June 2006.  However, an increase was seen in July to 58 and in September to 82 per 1,000, peaks during these months are also seen in all Wards within the Borough, but levels returned to the lower rates in August and October 2006.
