1. Population

Resident Population

The 2001 Census shows that the population of Newstead is 2,103 (1.89% of the Borough’s population). This makes Newstead the nineteenth most populated of the 22 wards in Gedling. The mid-year estimate for June 2004 gives a resident population of 2,133 (1.9% of the Borough’s population) and remains the nineteenth most populated ward.  The population gender split is estimated as 49.3% male and 50.7% female.  

Age

The average age of a person living in Newstead is 39.4 years, compared to an average age in Gedling Borough of 40.1. This gives the Ward the sixteenth oldest average population of the 22 Wards in the Borough. Over one fifth (20.5%) of Newstead's population is under sixteen. 60.1% of the population are between the ages of 16 and 60, 19.3% are 60 and over. (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Ethnicity

96.05% of Newstead's population is either White British or White Irish. This means that 3.95% of the population are from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) group, and accounts for 1.36% (57 residents) of the Borough’s total BME population. This gives Newstead the nineteenth largest BME population in Gedling Borough.

Religion

As measured in the 2001 Census, 72.8% of Newstead’s population is Christian. People from other faith groups make up 2.6 % of the ward population. This is higher than the 1.8% of people from other faith groups that make up the population of Gedling Borough as a whole.  As much as 16.8% of the population stated that they have no religion. Marital Status

As measured in the 2001 Census, the vast majority (55.0%) of Newstead’s population is married or re-married. 25.4% of the population is single. The married or re-married percentage of the population on Newstead is therefore slightly higher than across the whole of the Borough, while the single percentage of the population is lower. Health

In 2005 Newstead had a birth rate of 45.894 per 1000 women aged 15 to 44. This gave Newstead the fifteenth highest birth rate in Gedling Borough. (Source: Gedling PCT, 2007).

Newstead had an average death rate of 671.08 per 100,000 population between 2001 and 2003. This gave Newstead the ninth highest death rate in Gedling. (Source: Gedling PCT).

For 2005 Newstead had an average female life expectancy of 79.9 years which is the sixteenth highest level of female life expectancy in the Borough.  The average male life expectancy is 75.6 years which is the sixteenth highest male life expectancy out of the 22 wards.  (Source:  Gedling PCT, 2007).

Household

According to the 2001 Census there are 888 households in Newstead. Of these 571 are one family households, 265 are one person households and 52 are other households. 2. Employment

Unemployment

As of December 2006 there were 30 residents in Newstead registered as unemployed. This represents 2.3% of the total Ward population. Unemployment rate is higher in Newstead than it is across the Borough as a whole where 1.8% of the total population is unemployed. 4.Crime Figures

The figures show incidents of crime remained at 10 and below per 1,000 population from October 2005 through to June 2006.  However, an increase was seen in July to 26 and in September to 40 per 1,000, peaks during these months are also seen in all Wards within the Borough, but levels returned to the lower rates in August and October 2006.
