1. Population

Resident Population

The 2001 Census shows that the resident population of St Marys is 6,801 (6.08% of the Borough’s population). This makes St Marys the ninth most populated of the 22 wards in Gedling. The population is split by gender as follows: - 48% male and 52% female.

The mid-year estimate for June 2004 gives a resident population of 6.705 (6% of the Borough’s population) and remains the ninth most populated ward.  The population gender split is estimated as 48.4% male and 51.6% female. Age

The average age of a person living in St Marys is 39.5 years, compared to an average age in Gedling Borough of 40.1. This gives the Ward the fifteenth oldest average population of the 22 Wards in the Borough. One fifth (20%) of St Marys’s population is under sixteen. 58.5% of the population are between the ages of 16 and 60, and 21.6% re 60 and over. (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Ethnicity

96.16% of St Marys population is either White British or White Irish. This means that 3.84% of the population are from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) group, and accounts for 4.40% (184 residents) of the Borough’s total BME population. This gives St Marys the eighth largest BME population in Gedling Borough.

Religion

As measured in the 2001 Census, 73.3% of St Marys population is Christian. People from other faith groups make up 1.2 % of the ward population. This is lower than the 1.8% of people from other faith groups that make up the population of Gedling Borough as a whole.  As much as 17.6 of the population stated that they have no religion (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Marital Status

As measured in the 2001 Census, the vast majority (56.1%) of St Marys’ population is married or re-married. 25.8% of the population is single. The married or re-married percentage of the population on St Marys is therefore higher than across the whole of the Borough, while the single percentage of the population is lower. Health

In 2005 St Marys had a birth rate of 51.650 per 1000 women aged 15 to 44. This gave St Marys the seventh highest birth rate in Gedling Borough. (Source: Gedling PCT, 2007)

St Marys had an average death rate of 488.61 per 100,000 population between 2001 and 2003. This gave St Marys the eighteenth highest death rate in Gedling borough. (Source: Gedling PCT).

For 2005 St Marys had an average female life expectancy of 84.8 years which is the third highest level of female life expectancy in the Borough.  The average male life expectancy is 76.8 years which is the ninth highest male life expectancy out of the 22 wards.  (Source:  Gedling PCT, 2007).

In February 2007 there were 350 residents in St Marys receiving Disabled Living Allowance. This gave St Marys the third highest number of claimants in the Borough. (Source: Department for Work and Pensions).

According to the 2001 Census there are 2804 households in St Marys. Of these 1975 are one family households, 703 are one person households and 126 are other households. One family households are broken down in to 1172 Married Couple households, 238 Cohabiting Couple Family households, 277 Lone Parent households and 288 Pensioner households. 2. Employment

Unemployment

As of December 2006 there were 105 residents in St Marys registered as unemployed. This represents 2.5% of the total Ward population. Unemployment rate is higher in St Marys than it is across the Borough as a whole where 1.8% of the total population is unemployed. 4.Crime Figures

The figures show incidents of crime remained just above 5 per 1,000 population from October 2005 through to June 2006.  However, an increase was seen in July to 24 and in September to 35 per 1,000, peaks during these months are also seen in all Wards within the Borough, but levels returned to the lower rates in August and October 2006.
