1. Population

Resident Population

The 2001 Census shows that the resident population of Valley is 4,001 (3.58% of the Borough’s population). This makes Valley the sixteenth most populated of the 22 wards in Gedling. The population is split by gender as follows: - 48% male and 52% female.

Age

The average age of Valley’s population is 40.2 years, compared to an average age in Gedling Borough of 40.1. This gives the Ward the tenth oldest average population of the 22 Wards in the Borough. Over one fifth (20.1%) of Valley’s population is under sixteen. 56.9% of the population are between the ages of 16 and 60, and 23% are 60 and over. (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Ethnicity

94.6% of Valley’s population is either White British or White Irish. This means that 5.4% of the population are from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) group, and accounts for 3.73% (156 residents) of the Borough’s total BME population. This gives Valley the eleventh largest BME population in Gedling Borough.

The BME population is split to reveal that 1.12% is of Mixed heritage; 1.25% is Asian or Asian British; 1.37% is Black or Black British; and 0.2% is either Chinese or from another Ethnic group. (Source: ONS, Census 2001).

Religion

As measured in the 2001 Census, 67.7%of Valley’s population is Christian. People from other faith groups make up 1.8 % of the ward population. This is equal to the 1.8% of people from other faith groups that make up the population of Gedling Borough as a whole.  As much as 22.2% of the population stated that they have no religion. Marital Status

As measured in the 2001 Census, the vast majority (49.1%) of Valley’s population is married or re-married. 27.3% of the population is single. The married or re-married percentage of the population on Valley is therefore lower than across the whole of the Borough, while the single percentage of the population is slightly higher. Health

In 2005 Valley had a birth rate of 50.672 per 1000 women aged 15 to 44. This gave Valley the ninth highest birth rate in Gedling Borough.(Source: Gedling PCT, 2007).

Valley had a death rate of 544.67 per 100,000 population between 2001 and 2003. This gave Valley the sixteenth highest death rate in Gedling (Source: Gedling PCT).

For 2005 Valley had an average female life expectancy of 82.3 years which is the tenth highest level of female life expectancy in the Borough.  The average male life expectancy is 76.7 years which is the tenth highest male life expectancy out of the 22 wards.  (Source:  Gedling PCT, 2007).

In February 2007 there were 265 residents in Valley receiving Disabled Living Allowance. This gave Valley the eleventh highest number of claimants in the Borough. (Source: Department for Work and Pensions).

The 2001 Census shows that within Valley 891 individuals declared they had a limiting long-term illness, giving a percentage of 22.27% which is the twentieth highest percentage in the Borough.  (Source: ONS Census 2001).

Household

According to the 2001 Census there are 1755 households in Valley. Of these 1125 are one family households, 557 are one person households and 73 are other households. One family households are broken down in to 563 Married Couple households, 166 Cohabiting Couple Family households, 221 Lone Parent households and 175 Pensioners households. 2. Employment

Unemployment

As of December 2006 there were 66 residents in Valley registered as unemployed. This represents 2.8% of the total Ward population. Unemployment rate is higher in Valley than it is across the Borough as a whole where 1.8% of the total population is unemployed. After a slight increase in August 2006 there has been a general trend towards decreasing unemployment over the last six months with a fall in the number of unemployed from 71 to 66.  (Source: Nottinghamshire County Council).

4.Crime Figures

The figures show incidents of crime remained just above 10 per 1,000 population from October 2005 through to June 2006.  However, an increase was seen in July to 41 and in September to 59 per 1,000, peaks during these months are also seen in all Wards within the Borough, but levels returned to the lower rates in August and October 2006.
