Loft Insulation

As much as a third of your heating costs could be escaping through your roof. Loft insulation is a very effective way to reduce your heating bills.

Simply by insulating your loft to the recommended depth of 250mm, you can save wasted energy and money. You can even do it yourself! Talk to your local DIY store or builders mercchants for details.

Cavity wall insulation

Up to 33 per cent of the heat produced in your home is lost through the walls.

The good news is that cavity wall insulation is quick, clean and relatively inexpensive and it could save you £100-£120 a year on your fuel bills.

It will create an even temperature in your home, help prevent condensation on the walls and can also reduce the amount of heat building up inside your home during the summer.

Draught proofing

Draughtproofing is an easy, cost effective way to reduce heating bills. Most materials are available from DIY stores and there are several types available from brushes, foams and sealants to strips and shaped rubber or plastic.

A simple test is to hold your palm up against the windows in your home. If you feel cold air coming through, warm air is escaping. The majority of purposes can suffer from up to 20 per cent of heat loss through ventilation and draughts.

Tanks and pipes insulation

Insulating hot water tanks and pipes will help keep your water hot. Fitting a British Standard "jacket" to your hot water cylinder will cut heat loss by around 75% and save you money. They can be found in any good DIY store and are cheap and easy to fit. If you already have a jacket fitted to your hot water cylinder, check that it is at least 75mm thick.

Glazing

If you don't already have double-glazing in your home, then it's definitely worth thinking about. It can be quite expensive so if you can't afford to replace all the windows, why not choose the rooms that cost you the most to heat? The result could mean that you reduce heat loss through your windows by half.

By trapping air between two panes of glass, double-glazing produces an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss. Double-glazed windows come in a variety of styles but it may be worth checking if there are any restrictions on your house due to age and location.
