A new housing organisation for Gedling Borough

The housing stock transfer will be decided through a secret ballot that will be held in 2007. Transfer is not a foregone conclusion and so therefore neither is Gedling Homes. Only tenants can decide on whether the transfer goes ahead. Each tenant will receive a ballot paper and be invited to place their vote. Only if the majority of tenants vote yes will the transfer go ahead.

Gedling Borough Council will help to set up Gedling Homes, which will be a not-for-profit housing organisation within the Gedling community.

Whilst being locally based and accountable, Gedling Homes will also be part of an existing housing group called New Charter Housing Trust Group which was established following a housing stock transfer from Tameside Metropolitan Council in 2000. New Charter’s role will include providing support and advice to Gedling Homes.

Gedling Homes would;

Gedling Homes will be able to invest a significant amount of money on tenants’ homes if the stock is transferred. This is because Gedling Homes will be governed by different borrowing requirements to the Council and so will therefore be able to get the money needed to give tenants improved homes and communities. The money would allow for not just the basic Government Decent Homes Standard but also the Gedling Tenants Standard, which is higher.
