Arnold Carnival is a highly successful two-day community event held in Arnot Hill Park, Arnold, Nottingham. The first Carnival was to celebrate the Millennium in 2000 and was organised by Gedling Borough Council's Arts and Events Officer. In 2002 another Carnival was held to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee and the bi-centenary of Richard Parkes Bonington. Carnival Mid-Summer held last year, was to mark the completion of the park restoration. All three Carnivals were so successful, they have now become annual events attracting over 15,000 people over each weekend.

The Carnival is solely funded by Gedling Borough Council, but for the Millennium, financial assistance was received from the Millennium Lottery Fund and the Arnold Local Area Forum.

The Carnival included performances from Take on That, The Rolling Clones, the Bogus Brothers and the original members of The Real Thing, who had 70’s hits such as “You To Me Are Everything”, “Can’t Get By Without You” and “Feel The Force”.

Both professional and community groups also took to the stage to entertain.

Arnold Churches Together paraded through Arnold Town Centre Saturday afternoon, led by the Boy’s Brigade Band.  Over 1,000 people took part and for those who were unable to complete the route, Hearson’s Coaches provided a 1920s open top bus so they could join in.

The Fun Dog Show raised money for the Mayor of Gedling’s chosen charity, The  Haywood House Hospice.  There were 8 classes with over 140 dogs being entered. A variety of activities were available for children of all ages, including the very popular rocket making with the Gedling Play Forum and Children’s Fun Fair provided by Proctor & Mellors.

There were circus skills, lots of sporting activities, a climbing wall, archery, bmx/skateboarding and advice from Sporting Champion and Commonwealth and Olympic Bronze medal winner Bryan Steele.  We were also fortunate to have stilt walkers, magicians, Burnley’s award winning dry-land synchronised swimming stars, The Van Dunk Brothers and The Shifting Sands Theatre Company.

Plans are already underway for next year’s Carnival scheduled for the weekend of 20th & 21st June 2009 at Arnot Hill Park.
