Rights of Burial

All our new, full-sized graves are dug for three coffins, two American-style caskets or eight caskets of ashes, although these are not guaranteed due to ground conditions.

All grave deeds must be registered in one name only. You may also purchase a second grave space at the time of burial and we will make every effort to try and locate a grave near a loved one.

You can purchase the exclusive Rights of Burial to a grave space for a period of 50 years, meaning that no burial can take place without your consent. The Chapel at Redhill Cemetery

It may also be possible to renew your rights at the end of this period, although if you do not wish to retain these rights then the grave will revert back to the ownership of the council.

You may also apply for permission to erect a monument of your choice on these sites, with details of the various options available on the Burial areas section of this page.

To pre-purchase a grave space, please contact our Cemeteries team using the details provided above.

Anyone wanting a non private, common grave will hold no rights to the plot and it is possible that other interments will take place in this space. Monuments are not permitted on non-private grave spaces, although permission may be granted for a small vase or plaque.

What’s allowed on our burial areas

Headstones up to one metre in height are permitted on our lawn burial areas, although no further monuments are permitted due to maintenance requirements.

Our traditional burial areas allow headstones of up to one metre and 370 millimetres in height, with kerbs around the grave area permitted up to two metres and 130 millimetres by 910 millimetres. Vases and plaques are also permitted on these grave spaces.

Standard family cremation plots are also available for up to four interments or four scattering of ashes, with a small headstone (up to 510 millimetres in height), vase or plaque also permitted on these plots.

You may also purchase cremation plots for two or one internments only, although there are on restrictions on the type of memorials permitted on these plots.

You can also bury or scatter ashes on a family grave, although permission must first be obtained by contacting our Cemeteries team using the details provided above.

All our cemeteries have Gardens of Rest where ashes may be scattered amongst our communal flower beds. A commemorative vase or plaque may also be placed with the permission of our Cemeteries team.

Available at our Carlton Cemetery, this special area is adjacent to the garden of rest and is available for scattering of ashes in a natural meadowland environment. No memorials are permitted in this area.

Choosing a headstone

You are free to choose any Stonemason that is approved to work in our cemeteries, with details of local stonemasons available on the Yellow Pages website. (External site)

Please note that the grave owner has sole responsibility for the safety and maintenance of the memorial. We are not responsible for repairs or for damage caused by storms or vandalism, so we suggest that insurance is taken out on all memorials.

Selling and transferring plot fees
