In March 2007 the Gedling Play Partnership submitted a bid to the Big Lottery Funds (BLF) Children's Play Programme seeking funding to deliver a portfolio of projects to improve play opportunities across the Borough. BLF awarded the Gedling area with a grant of £219,586, to fund all four projects submitted in the portfolio.

Portfolio of Projects

The portfolio consists of four projects developed by members of the play partnership. Three of the projects involve the expansion and refurbishment of outdoor play spaces within the Borough, the fourth project will provide outreach play workers to deliver a range of quality, inclusive, supervised play opportunities in community settings.

The portfolio has the following 5 outcomes to meet in delivering the projects:

  1. The local community are engaged in the delivery or development of play opportunities in order to help raise the profile of play, improve community attitude and develop more resources for play
  2. Children and young people will have improved their social skills and knowledge of play through positive involvement in the development or delivery of play opportunities in the Borough
  3. Children report increased satisfaction in the range and quantity play and recreational activities in the Borough
  4. Children and young people report an improved sense of safety and security whilst playing as a result of an increase in supervised play and recreational experiences
  5. Increase the range and quantity of equipped play provision through the creation of 3 new or improved areas of equipped play provision resulting in a reported visible increase in children and young peoples physical and social enjoyment.

Positive Play in the Community

Positive Play in the Community is a mobile, open access play scheme using public open spaces and parks to deliver non-formal education in a non-formal setting where play is the main focus of activity. The scheme provides supervised play activities where children are free to come and go as they please. The primary goal is to provide children and young people with safe play opportunities in neighbourhood settings close to their home. The scheme is free for children and young people to attend.

The scheme is aimed at children and young people aged 8 – 14 years and accessible to all. The scheme will operate during school holidays and evenings during the summer months in a variety of parks and open spaces across the borough and will be delivered by Nottinghamshire County Council Play Service.

Lambley Playground

The project will create play opportunities for the children and families in Lambley and the surrounding area through the provision traditional and natural play equipment to develop the existing play space in to an equipped play area. The new play area will be located by Lambley School. The local school pupils have been consulted on the type of equipment they would like. The project is being delivered by Lambley Parish Council

Colwick Young Peoples Facility

The project is to create a play space for older children and teenagers in the local community and involves the installation of facilities to provide opportunities for them to play, meet and be physically and socially active. The project will deliver a youth shelter and an enclosed ball court to the site at Colwick recreation ground providing space to play games and sport expanding the current small basket ball area. The local young persons residents group has been involved in the specification of the type of equipment they would like to see installed. The project is being delivered by Colwick Parish Council in partnership with Gedling Borough Council.

Papplewick Playing Field Equipment Upgrade

The project is to upgrade and enhance the equipped play provision for children and young people on the existing play area on Papplewick Playing Field. The play area is situated behind the local village hall from which there is open access. The new equipment will cater for a range of age groups and offers inclusive play opportunities. The funding will provide a teen shelter to complement the skate park on site. A new tower unit equipped with slide, tunnel and bridge will replace existing out of date climbing equipment and two activity play panels will compliment existing equipment to create a play zone for younger children who are currently not adequately catered for. The project will create different play zones within one community facility to cover a wide range of ages and needs. The project is being delivered by Papplewick Parish Council.
