A partnership was instigated between the Nottingham Trent University and Gedling Borough Council in 2002 / 2003.

Ashley Marriott (Former Gedling Borough Council Leisure Facilities Officer) and Chris Parker (Senior Lecturer in Sport and Leisure Management at the Nottingham Trent University, featured left) formed the mutually beneficial partnership, creating a programme of work for the university students based on leisure facilities owned by Gedling Borough Council.
In 2003 a survey was conducted by the Society of Chief Personnel Officers (SOCPO), which identified problems in recruitment. This is an issue that has not escaped the Leisure Industry and is currently an increasing problem.
Gedling Borough Council Leisure Officers have taken a new stance and grasped the opportunity to tackle this problem by creating a partnership with Nottingham Trent University that recognises and develops the links that exist between the skills gained through academic study and the application of these into the real life business world.
The rising talent of Strategic Management undergraduates from the BSc Honors, Sport (Science and Management) degree course, follow a programme of study concerned with strategic planning and the implementation of change. Senior Lecturer in Sport & Leisure Management, Chris Parker, guides his students through the process of performing a strategic review after which he provides them with the necessary techniques to turn their findings into a meaningful reality.
The mutually beneficial partnership began in 2002 / 03 and has to date produced the following successes:
Keith Tansley, Head of Leisure at Gedling Borough Council stated;
“The partnership is beneficial to both parties; to the student it provides knowledge gained through practical application of theory and assists in achieving greater academic success, to us it opened our eyes to the potential of developing non-operationally experienced students who clearly have the ability to excel within the Leisure Industry".

Congratulations to Matt Weatherley, Sean Hagger, Antony Ludkins, and Mark Ecott.

Joseph O’Conner (2000) explains that NLP began by studying the best communicators, and has evolved into the systemic study of human communication. It has grown by adding practical tools and methods generated by modeling exceptional people. These tools are used internationally in sports, business, training, sales, law and education. O’ Conner adds that NLP is more than just a collection of techniques, it is a way of thinking, a frame of mind based on curiosity, exploration and fun.
Gedling Borough Council Leisure Staff are embracing this technique in communication learning and understanding by offering their Leisure Centre staff the opportunity to benefit from several training sessions that will be run by Chris Parker, a licensed Master Practitioner of NLP. Two members of staff have taken their learning and knowledge of this area one-step further by becoming licensed Practioners of NLP.
