Welcome to Parks and Open Spaces

Parks for People

Traditionally public parks were intended for all members of society and they have provided a variety of uses. The earliest use foreseen was informal promenading and this was followed by sports such as cricket and football and later children’s play, but it was not until the mid 19th century that urban parks were created throughout Britain. This was as a response to appalling problems of the urban environment brought about by industrialisation and rapid population growth. Official recognition of the need for parks dates from 1833.

The Benefits of Parks

Public open spaces have four main functions: to provide opportunities for recreation, to contribute to a sustainable natural environment, to enhance the visual amenity of the urban landscape and to provide a focal point for community activity and involvement.
