Welcome to Sports Development

The Sports Development Services work in partnership with others to enable, facilitate and advise a range of organisations involved in providing sporting opportunities for the community.
What does Sports Development do?
- It develops and maintains effective and mutually beneficial partnerships to ensure the most effective use of resources.
- It identifies and works towards the provision of facilities which provide opportunities for informal recreation and supports the councils' Crime and Disorder Strategy.
- It raises the profile of services, facilities and sports clubs within the community and recognises the role that sport can play in improving the quality of life for the residents of Gedling.
- It works to develop an active community with a strong community spirit.
- It works with the Positive Moves programme on a range of programmes which can improve the health of local people.
- It works with a range of partners to create and sustain quality opportunities for all people to participate in sport at whatever level they wish.
What are the Sports Development Service Priorities?
A. Coach Education and Club Development
- Provide courses and training programmes
- Develop resources
- Give advice and support on grant aid
- Assist in organising special events

B. Develop National Events and Initiatives: Active Sports and Nottinghamshire Youth Games
Active Sports in Nottinghamshire
This is a seven year programme targeted at children aged between seven and ten years. Nine sports are included
- Athletics
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Girls' Football
- Hockey
- Netball
- Rugby
- Swimming
- Tennis
The programme is divided into four stages:
Stage 1: Local schemes: skilled sessions and festivals
Stage 2: Club development
Stage 3: Assessment of Players
Stage 4: Coaching sessions for assessed players.
Nottinghamshire Youth Games

The aim of the programme is to provide young people with sporting and officiating opportunities, enabling them to take part in a massive sporting festival held on a Saturday during July. Squads representing the borough of Gedling area selected by organising inter school tournaments, trials and festivals. There are twelve sports included for 2003.

The Sports Development Service works closely with Gedling Borough schools and local sports clubs in developing the programme.

- By providing guidance, advice, grants and support
- By operating an equipment loan system
- By encouraging competitive sporting opportunities for young people
D. Talented Individuals
- By providing support, advice, grants and guidance
- By operating a small grants scheme for talented individuals.
