Gedling Leisure operates a comprehensive range of swimming lessons for both adults and children.
coupled with our own extensive distance award scheme.
We offer a range of lessons that will suit the needs of anyone wishing to learn or simply improve their techniques.
These allow you to attend as many lessons as often as suits your needs and simply pay as you arrive.
These are courses of eight lessons at varying levels from beginners to improvers.
Age: For children from 4 months to 3 years old.
Pre-requisite: To be accompanied by an adult in the water.
Aim: To introduce and increase water confidence in a safe and fun environment.
Award Available: Penguin 1
Age: For children less than 5 years old.
Pre-requisite: To be accompanied by an adult in the water.
Aim: To increase water confidence, introduce swimming techniques both on the front and back and to assist adults with information to increase their child's swimming confidence. These are fully structured swimming lessons.
Award Available: Penguin 2 & 3
Age: 5 years upward.
Pre-requisite: To have some confidence in the water.
Aim: To provide a structured swimming lesson for the non-swimmer using buoyancy aids to increase water confidence.
Awards Available: Seal 1
Age: 5 years upward.
Pre-requisite: The ability to swim 3-4 metres on front and back without aids.
Aim: To improve swimming techniques and ability, introducing front and back crawl.
Advanced water confidence to include floatation and underwater work.
Awards Available: Seal 2 and 5 metre distance award
Age: 5 years upward
Pre-requisite: The ability to swim 5 metres front paddle/ crawl and 5 metres back paddle/ crawl.
Aim: To improve stroke technique on the three main strokes. Increase strength and stamina. Introduce surface dives, treading water, sculling and underwater swimming.
Awards Available: Seal 3 and 10 metres distance award
Age: 5 years upward.
Pre-requisite: Water confidence in the large pool and the ability to swim front and back crawl.
Aim: To improve stroke technique on the three main strokes. Increase strength and stamina. Introduce surface dives, treading water, sculling and underwater swimming.
Awards Available: Octopus 1 and 25 metre distance award.
Age: 5 years upward.
Pre-requisite: An ability to swim correct strokes in deep water. A basic understanding of butterfly stroke. Some knowledge of elementary diving.
Aim: To advance swimming techniques and to introduce a wider range of water skills, including sidestroke and lifesaving backstroke.
Awards Available: Octopus 2 and 50 metre distance award.
Age: 5 years upward.
Pre-requisite: To be able to confidently swim 50 metres continuously on the front and back, in a recognised stroke.
Aim: To develop all strokes, improve stamina. An introduction to swimming lengths and further develop diving skills.
Awards Available: Octopus 3 and 100 metre distance award.
Age: 5 years upward.
Pre-requisite: The ability to swim 100 metres in three of the main strokes. Surface dive, swim underwater and have a working knowledge of diving.
Aim: To increase strength and stamina, develop strokes and introduce competitive starts and turns.
Awards Available: Dolphin 1 and 200 metres.
Age: 5 years upward.
Pre-requisite: The ability to swim 200 metres continuously using three of the four main strokes. Show knowledge of advanced water skills including surface diving, sculling and diving.
Aim: To improve stamina, develop competitive skills and introduce basic lifesaving skills.
Awards Available: Dolphin 2 and 400 metres.
Age: 7 years upward.
Pre-requisite: The ability to swim 400 metres with confidence, surface dive and tread water.
Aim: To teach water safety and equip children with the basic knowledge and understanding of personal survival techniques.
Awards Available: Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Gedling Leisure Distance Awards require children to complete distances in more than one stroke. For comparison purposes, 25 metres equates to 1 length of the main pool at Carlton Forum Leisure Centre and Arnold Leisure Centre and 1.4 lengths at Calverton Leisure Centre.
Gedling Leisure operates a system where existing pupils are given priority when re-enrolment commences for the next set of courses. This is to ensure quality and continuity.
Courses are normally eight weeks in duration. Pupils will be issued a slip on week six of the course indicating which level they should attend next. Re-enrolment commences in week seven for the next course. Any remaining places are opened to new customers during week eight.
Please complete an application form and hand it to Reception. The Centre will inform you when the next course is about to commence re-enrolment, which occurs on week eight of each course.
Payment for all classes is required in advance of the start of the course. Payment is by means of Cash or Cheque.
No refunds are available for children who miss part of the course.
The Gedling Swim School has its own unique water skills and distance award schemes. Pupils who successfully complete an award will be issued with a slip, which should be taken to Reception where the badges/ certificates can be purchased.
In order to ensure quality tuition, class sizes will be limited to a maximum of 15 children.
All lessons are for a maximum of 25 minutes.
