Food Alerts

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) operates an alerts system to warn both ourselves and the public to national and regional problems concerning food and allergies that do not meet food safety requirements.

How the system works

The system generally operates through the voluntary co-operation of the food industry in withdrawing food from sale or supply, with companies often advertising in national newspapers to alert customers to the problem

Where problems occur, affected products will generally be withdrawn by the food companies. In more serious cases, withdrawal of the food involves the food companies working directly with central and local Government.

The national alert system is divided into the following three categories, with alerts under each category outlining the relevant course of action we must take:
