Food Alerts

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) operates a system to alert local authorities and the public to national and regional problems concerning food and alergies that do not meet food safety requirements. Where a problem has occurred food is normally withdrawn through voluntary action of the food companies concerned. In more serious cases withdrawl of the food involves the food companies working with central Government and local authorities and gives rise to a food alert being issued.

The food hazard warning system largely operates through the voluntary co-operation of the food industry in withdrawing food from sale or supply. Often food companies advertise in national newspapers to help alert consumers to the problem.

The national alert system has three categories:

Each food alert will state the action that central Government expects that local authorities must take.
