Safer Food, Better Business

Food law has changed!

On the 1st of January 2006 the law relating to food hygiene changed in this country to reflect widesweeping European-led harmonisation which saw many different pieces of old legislation being revised and condensed into fewer regulations. Our main food page contains much more information on the new regulations. The new law requires that all food businesses will need to set up and maintain methods that will make food safe to eat. These methods will need to be written down. Previously only a few specific businesses such as meat products producers and butchers' shops needed to meet the raised standards of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) system. Many larger businesses already operate HACCP type systems and will meet the new requirements. The new legislation is intent on raising the standards expected of smaller food businesses across Europe.

Don’t worry!

In this country the Food Standards Agency has developed a pack called Safer Food, Better Business (SFBB) which your local Gedling Borough Council Food Safety Officers will tailor with you to fit your business. Currently there are two SFBB packs- one for traditional caterers and a more recent, smaller pack aimed at retailers.

Other language SFBB packs

More recently three variations of the catering SFBB pack have been released by the FSA-

"SFBB For Chinese Cuisine" (dual English/Chinese)

"SFBB pack" in Chinese

"SFBB pack for Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan Cuisines"

On-line SFBB DVD in 16 languages

The Food Standards Agency has made their multi-lingual SFBB DVD availalbe for download or viewing on their web site. You can use the following link to take you to their site:  http://www.food.gov.uk/sfbb

How much will it cost?

The SFBB packs and our consultancy visits are all free, however in some cases hygiene matters may be identified at your business that you will have to action.

How will it affect your business?

In adopting SFBB the standard of food hygiene will improve even further. SFBB could be summed up as, "Safer Food Means Better Business".

Your business will be recognised publicly for adopting Safer Food, Better Business (see below).

It will mprove both your food hygiene knowledge and that of staff.

SFBB is an easy to use reference on how to prepare food safely and resolve problems quickly.

It will help educe the likelihood of food complaints and the possibility of food poisoning and be good for your business reputation.

Will I get recognition for introducing SFBB at my business?

As businesses finish the SFBB pack they can complete a form allowing their details to be displayed on this site. The Council would like to thank the following businesses for their cooperation and assistance in attending the Safer Food Better Business consultations and for the effort taken introducing Safer Food Better Business at their premises

We will continue to add the details of food businesses that have completed the introduction of SFBB by adding their business details.

How much of my time will it take?

Caterers will receive 3 visits from one of our food hygiene consultants. Each visit will last between 1 and 1½ hours. These visits will be by appointment and at a time to suit you. Some time and effort will be needed to make improvements. A daily diary forms part of the system which should take a minute of your day to complete. Adopting Safer Food Better Businessmeans future hygiene inspections may take up less of your time. Experience has found that the smaller retailers SFBB can be fully discussed with you in the course of one routine visit to your premises.

Who will be affected?

The SFBB scheme has been developed initially for traditional caterers but has recentlly been expanded to take in small retailers. A pack tailored for other catering premises such as takeaways will be made available in the near future. The whole national SFBB programme is expected to take two to three years to complete.

What will happen at the visits?

Initially the food hygiene consultant will make a note of the current standards at your premises. This will be used to compare the changes before and after you have adopted Safer Food Better Business. The consultant will then explain how the pack works and begin to work through all areas of food preparation. You will be asked what you do at the moment and come to an agreement on how this can be improved if at all. The visits will be informal. Ideally the cook, chef or manager would be present as well as the business owner. If you need to work to a tight time schedule then the Officer will be respectful and not stay beyond the agreed time. An appointment will be made for a subsequent visit.

What do I need to do now?

If your business is a traditional catering concern and you do not have a formal management system already then you will be contacted by one of Gedling Borough’s food hygiene consultants. They will give you a Safer Food Better Business pack and make an appointment to visit you. At this point you can raise any queries you may have with the consultant. The consultant will work closely with the officer who usually inspects your business. Retail food businesses are being introduced to the SFBB system at their next due inspection date.

Will I get into trouble if everything isn’t right?

The idea of Safer Food Better Business is to work jointly with business owners and their employees to make food ‘safer and better’.  The Consultant will help, encourage and support you in achieving these goals. This will be an ideal time to make the most of your experience and that of the Consultant to improve your business. If there are serious issues at the business these will be raised with you for prompt attention.
