To buy and sell game a dealer historically required two licences: one granted by the local authority in which the dealer wished to trade (Game Act 1831) and an excise licence under the Game Licences Act 1860. Recent legislation, The Regulatory Reform (Game) Order 2007 came into force on the 1st August 2007 and amends the Game Act 1831 and Deer Act 1991 and repealing the Game License Act of 1860.
There is no longer a requirement to hold a game licence in order to take or kill game, and removes the requirement to hold a local authority licence and an excise licence (dealing licences) in order to deal in game. The legislation also removes the restrictions on dealing in game birds and venison during the close season, thereby permitting game to be sold by everyone all year round providing the animal was lawfully killed.
