The Gambling Act 2005 received Royal Assent on the 7th April 2005 and intends to comprehensively modernise the law on gambling and introduces a powerful regulator for gambling, the Gambling Commission which will come out of the existing Gaming Board for Great Britain. The Act also gives responsibility for the licensing of gambling premises to Local Authorities.
Copies of the Gambling Act can be obtained from the Her Majesty's Stationery Office website and from Stationery Office bookshops.
You can visit the web site of the Gambling Commission at http://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk for further information.
The new Act requires three types of licence:
Operators licences and personal licences will be issued and regulated by the Gambling commission whilst local authorities will be responsible for the issue and regulation of premises licences.
