Greater Nottingham Aligned Core Strategy

Aligned Core Strategy

As part of the Local Development Framework, the Aligned Core Strategy will set out the strategic policy direction for future spatial development in the Borough. It is anticipated that this document will be adopted in December 2011 and will cover the period up to 2026.

What is the Aligned Core Strategy?

Initially we began work on a Core Strategy solely for the Borough, as outlined in our Core Strategy Archive. However, since the introduction of the new Local Development Framework planning system in 2004, government policy affecting core strategies was clarified to include the document’s content and the procedures in place for its preparation.

We have therefore decided to revisit our earlier work to ensure we comply with the most up-to-date guidance on good practice.

As part of this process, we began working with other Greater Nottingham authorities to prepare an aligned core strategy. By working together, planning for the area will be more consistent and the administrative boundaries of the local authorities will not get in the way of good planning and service documents.

Although there is no agreement in place to prepare a single Joint Core Strategy with these authorities, the option has been left open should we see fit to do so in future.

Public Consultation

During June and July 2009, we undertook wide ranging public and stakeholder consultation on an ‘Issues and Options’ Report.  This aimed to gather your views to identify the key issues facing the area and sought comments on a number of alternatives to shape future development within Greater Nottingham.  The Report of Consultation sets out an overview of the responses received to the consultation.

We have considered the consultation responses, government guidance and have developed an extensive technical evidence base (including for example flood risk and housing need studies) to draw up a more detailed strategic ‘Option for Consultation’ for public consultation.  The Greater Nottingham ‘Option for Consultation’ report sets out an overall spatial vision for Greater Nottingham and strategic policies which will guide how the councils will deal with:

Importantly, the report sets out how the councils intend to accommodate the housing growth targets required by Government, to ensure that the location of future development is sustainable, plan-led by Local Authorities and is accompanied by appropriate physical and social infrastructure.

We want views from community organisations, businesses, local groups, representatives and anyone else who lives, works, studies or visits here.

The consultation period ran from 15th February to 12th April 2010 and is now closed.
