Latest News

Parking charges were introduced across the borough from 3rd August 2009 in all council car parks.

We have introduced these charges in order to balance our books, invest in car parks and safeguard key services. The decision to introduce charges followed a public consultation exercise in December 2008 where there was a clear preference for car parking charging over major cuts in services or a large increase in council tax.

The charging structure will encourage short stay parking, meaning more parking for shoppers, which businesses have told the council is important to them.

The car parks affected by the charging are in the main shopping areas of the borough, including Mapperley, Arnold and Netherfield, as well as Burntstump car park and Arnot Hill bowling green car park.

Different rates apply depending on the area and type of car park. The prices are based on the car parks’ usage and consideration has been given to the effect on traders. Please see our permits and charges pages for more information.

In order to support businesses in the run up to Christmas (October to December) we introduced 30 minutes free parking in the main shopping car parks.

Following a review of the parking charges and 30 minutes free parking, in December 2009 the Council Leader announced a reduction in most of the car parking charges. This included a new 30 minute parking charge for 30p, to allow people to pop in, and a dramatically reduced rate for long stay parking. For more details on the announcement please visit our news pages.
