Positive Moves is an Exercise Referral Scheme for adults (aged 16 years old or above) who are physically inactive and have a medical condition or health problem. Physical activity can have a positive effect on many conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression and more.
You can take part in Positive Moves if you have one or more of these conditions and meet the criteria. However, if you have a heart condition this requires more specialist exercise instruction, with more information available on our Heartbeats page.
You must first visit your General Practitioner, Practice Nurse or another healthcare professional who will refer you to the Exercise Promotion team. Once you have been referred, the team will aim to contact you within 2 weeks to discuss your exercise options. We will then devise a unique exercise programme to suit you, as well as providing continuous support to help you to reach your goals and to help make physical activity part of your everyday life.
There are several options for the exercise sessions, and we'll help you find the best solution for you.
1. Group exercise classes
Designed especially for people on the Positive Moves Exercise Referral Scheme, we offer six group exercise classes at the Arnold, Calverton, Carlton Forum and Redhill Leisure Centres.
2. Supervised gym sessions
We offer supervised gym sessions at the Calverton, Carlton Forum and Redhill Leisure Centres.
3. Unsupervised activities
You are also able to participate in local walking groups (some of which are free) and swimming.
For the first 12 weeks of the scheme, the prices for the Leisure Centre based activities are subsidised. After this period the prices increase to the concessionary rate (which is cheaper than the standard rate), provided you complete the programme. However, if you decide to join the DNA Membership Scheme (allowing you unlimited use of the gym, swimming and workout classes), you will only pay the subsidised price for the duration of your membership and will not have to pay a joining fee. Up to date details of the DNA memberships and concessionary prices are available at all the Gedling Borough Council Leisure Centres.
The table below summarises the prices.
| Activity | Cost during first 12 weeks |
|---|---|
| Group Exercise Classes | £1.50 |
| Fitness Suite | £1.50 |
| Swimming | £1.00 |
Please wear comfortable clothing, supportive footwear and bring drinking water to all of your activity sessions. There are changing facilities and refreshments available to purchase at all locations.
