Trees and Hedges

Tree at Willow Park Recreation Ground We look after Tree Preservation Orders, Trees in Conservation Areas, Important Hedges and High Hedges within the borough.

A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is an order made on healthy trees, which make a significant impact on their local surroundings. The tree(s) should be clearly visible from a public place.

Certain hedgerows are affected by the Regulations – generally hedgerows in the countryside (but not hedges within or bordering a garden).

If you feel a hedge is getting to big the following criteria must be satisfied before we can consider a complaint:

The hedge must be two or more metres above ground level
The hedge must be formed by a line of two or more evergreens
The hedge must be a barrier to light or access (i.e. there are no gaps between the trees or shrubs)
The hedge is adversely affecting the reasonable enjoyment of domestic property
