Bonfire Smoke

Bonfire smoke can be a nuisance. If you feel you are experiencing an excessive amount, you can call us to make a complaint. Please note, your details will not be passed onto the complainee unless you give us permission.

What will we do about it?

Initially we will give you and the person you are complaining against some general advice. No further action will be taken unless a further complaint is made.
If further complaints are made, we will issue you with a monitoring form. You can use this to record the dates and times when bonfires are carried out.
Once we recieve this form back we will contact, the person you are complaining against to let them know that their bonfires have been recorded and that an investigating officer will now be monitoring them.
If after 3 observations, statutory nuisance is not established then both parties will be contacted and informed that the investigation has been completed and no action will be taken.
If a statutory nuisance is observed then an Abatement Notice will be served on the person responsible for the fires. The Notice will require the person to control their bonfires. If smoke still continues then evidence will be collected and could lead to a prosecution.
If at any stage the you feel that the bonfires are no longer causing a serious problem then both parties will be sent a completion letter and no further action will be taken.
