Garden Waste Collection Sometimes maggots can be an issue in bins. We have put together some handy information to help prevent against them.

Flies are attracted to food which is left out, including moist cat and dog food, so always cover food up in the kitchen especially when it is hot.
Ensure any food waste you put in the black bin is bagged up and that there are no holes in the bag. In hot weather you could double-bag this waste to reduce the smell and stop flies getting to it.
Consider freezing food waste like fish bones and meat until bin day.
Keep the bin lid shut. If your bin lid is broken or does not shut properly please contact us and we will repair or replace it.
If possible store your bins out of direct sunlight.
Ensure everything in your green bin is clean and dry, as flies will be attracted to any food residue. Rinse out tins and plastic containers.

If there are maggots in your wheeled bin, most of them will go when your bin is emptied.

Maggots and fly eggs can be killed by using boiling water and some cleaning products (always read the label).
Wash your bin out after it has been emptied. If you do not want to clean it yourself you can get in touch with professional bin cleaners.
Try using a cleaning product with a fragrance as this will help to deter flies from your bin.
Consider putting a bin deodoriser in your bin.
To prevent anything from sticking to the bottom of the bin you could put scrunched up newspaper at bottom with more flat sheets on top.
