Social media guidance

This page provides guidance on using social media and acceptable use of the council's social media channels.

Gedling Borough Council reserves the right to hide, restrict or remove any contributions that are not in line with the guidelines listed on this page or any applicable law.

Guidance for social media:

  • Posts must be civil, tasteful and relevant
  • Do not post messages that are unlawful, libellous, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented or racially offensive
  • Do not swear
  • Do not make defamatory statements. In law this means a statement that lowers the reputation of a person or organisation in the eyes of a reasonable person
  • Do not promote party political messages 
  • Do not post content copied from elsewhere, for which you do not own the copyright
  • Do not post the same message, or very similar messages, more than once (also called "spamming")
  • Do not publicise your or anyone else's personal information, such as contact details
  • Do not advertise products or services
  • Do not impersonate someone else

Monitoring social media accounts, responding and replying

Please note that our responses to replies, comments and direct messages depend on the relevant individual service and the views or comments given on any of our social media sites may not necessarily reflect the views of Gedling Borough Council.

Report something

If you need to report something to us (an unemptied bin, graffiti, flytipping etc), please use the online reporting systems. Please note that potholes are the responsibility of Nottinghamshire County Council and can be reported via their website.

Comments, Compliments and Complaints

We are unable to report and solve comments and complaints via social media. Please use the online Compliments and Complaints Forms.

Privacy

Any details you provide to register with Gedling Borough Council for social media will only be used for that purpose. We do not cross-reference these details with any other information held by the council.
