Returning to Nottinghamshire for the third time, and for the first time since 2018, the Tour of Britain will be making its way through Gedling Borough on Thursday 8 September.
The eight day tour, which starts in Aberdeen and finishes in The Needles on the Isle of Wight, will be coming through Gedling Borough for stage five of the event, entering the borough in Lambley, heading up the new Colliery Way, through Woodborough, Calverton and finally Ravenshead, before leaving the borough and continuing its journey to the stage finish in Mansfield.
The race is expected to enter Gedling Borough shortly after 12noon, a full list of estimated times and directions for the entire stage can be found on the Nottinghamshire County Council website.
View the interactive route map below to see exactly where the race will be passing.
A total of 19 teams and 114 riders are scheduled to compete in the race, which will be broadcasting live on ITV4 with flag-to-flag coverage of every stage, as well as a nightly highlights show, allowing fans in the UK to watch wherever they are. The modern-day Tour of Britain was launched in 2004 and has taken place every September since, with the exception of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
Road closures
There will be a small number of road closures involving the surrounding areas of each start and finish location. These closures will be finalised well in advance of the race taking place and will be available to view nearer the time on the Nottinghamshire County Council website, including how long the roads will be closed for.
In between each start and finish there will be a ‘rolling road closure’ system. This is where the race route, and junctions with access roads onto the route, are closed while the race passes through. Details of how rolling road closures work can be found on the Tour of Britain website.
The length of closure of the rolling road block depends upon how dispersed the riders are. Typically, the lead motorcycle instigating the closure is 15 minutes ahead of the lead rider. The closure then remains in place until all riders and race cars have passed through.
Children's craft event
Gedling Play Forum will be running a free arts workshop for children of all ages to make banners and decorations to line the route through Calverton.
The event takes place at Calverton Methodise Church from 2pm-4pm on Sunday 4 September. No booking required. The decorations made on the day will be used along the route when it passes on Thursday 8 September.
Gedling Leisure
Members of the Gedling Leisure team will be in Calverton giving out free three day passes on the day.
They are also running a Tour of Britain Gym Challenge in all of their gyms, where you can cycle the distance of the Nottinghamshire stage and be in with a chance of winning a free month's Gedling Leisure membership.
