Description

To commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War, a series of events have been planned across the borough. The events aim to bring people together to acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions made by historical and contemporary armed forces. For more information download our WWI booklet.

Arnold & The Great War
3 November – 30 November | Arnold Library, Front Street
All events are free of charge and open for anyone to attend. To mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War, the Arnold Local History Group will be presenting an exhibition at Arnold Library. There will be a series of talksaround WWI themes, from a local perspective on 17 and 24 November. All talks take place in the library meeting room and the exhibition will be in the library exhibition space. Here are two of the key events taking place during the month long exhibition.

WWI Remembered in Music, Words, Dance and Drama
3 November, 7pm | All Hallows Church, Gedling Village
A free concert with music from Carlton Brass Training Band, Gedling Homes Choir, Sylvia’s Singers, dance from Gedling Ballet School and readings of poetry and prose.

War Horse Film Screening
8 November, 7pm | All Hallows Church, Gedling Village
There will be a showing of the film “War Horse”, sponsored by the Gedling “Old Boys Club”. There will be a retiring collection for the RBL and the Church will be providing refreshments.

Netherfield Schools Remembrance Event
9 November, 10.45am | Netherfield Town Centre
To mark 100 years since the end of WWI, local school children will be making crosses in memory of those who died during WWI followed by a short service and a reading from the Mayor of Gedling.

Civic Centre Remembrance Event
10 November 11am - 4pm | Civic Centre, Arnot Hill Park
We’re hosting a special remembrance event with choirs, brass bands, memorabilia displays and art and craft activities. Amateur dramatics group The Prospect Players will be performing in character and reading out “letters and poems from The Front”, written by local school children. Gedling Play Forum will be organising a poppy making activity, producing a poppy for every name listed on the Arnot Hill Park War Memorial. Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry Association will be setting up an exhibition and also providing WWI uniforms and other dress up equipment for children to try on the day.

Arnold Remembrance Parade
11 November, 9am | The Victory Club, Church Drive
Starting at Church Drive the parade will make its way to St Pauls Church for a service at 9.30am. The parade will then head along Mansfield Road towards Arnot Hill Park for a service at the War Memorial. The parade will then march from Arnot Hill Park back to the Victory Club.

Gedling Remembrance Parade
11 November, 10am | All Hallows Church, Gedling Village
A Remembrance Service followed by a parade to the Gedling War Memorial for a wreath laying ceremony. There will then be a gathering in Gedling Memorial Hall at 11.15am for a viewing of the “Gedling’s Fallen” exhibition.

Netherfield Remembrance Event
11 November, 10.45am | St.Georges Church, Netherfield
A Remembrance Service will begin at 10.45am and will include the Act of Remembrance in front of the War Memorial at 11am.

Newstead Remembrance Event
11 November, 10.45am | Newstead Village War Memorial
A local youth club have worked with a community artist on a WWI display, creating large poppies with names of the fallen which will be at Annesley Church prior to the Remembrance Service.

Mapperley Remembrance Event
11 November, 11am | Mapperley War Memorial
There will be an informal gathering at the Mapperley War Memorial to mark this significant moment in history.

Gedling Country Park Beacon Lighting Event
11 November, 7pm | Spring Lane entrance only
Join the Mayor of Gedling, for an act of remembrance and the lighting of the beacon as part of nationwide beacon lighting ceremonies. Please wear sensible footwear and bring a torch due to limited lighting. Café 1899 will be open for this event.

Mapperley and Porchester District Parade
18 November, 10.30am | Bonington Road, Mapperley
A march will go from Bonington Road to the Mapperley Memorial for a service at 10.50am. The Mayor of Gedling, wreath bearers and dignitaries will front the parade before a short service, Act of Homage, last post and two minute silence.
