10. Norway Maple

 

Common Name - Norway Maple

Latin Name - Acer platanoides

 

Height -   17 to 22 Metres

This is an imposing and fast growing tree which, was introduced in the 17th Century and is a native of Norway and Central Europe but not Britain. The tree at maturity can grow upwards of 22 metres and bears bright yellow flowers in spring. Once pollinated by insects the female flowers develop into winged seeds known as ‘Samaras’. Its palmate leaves provides a spectacular profusion of yellow and sometimes, red leaves in autumn and these leaves are a favourite food source of caterpillars.  Additionally, the seeds of the tree are eaten by many birds and small mammals.
