14. Sycamore Celtic Maple
Common Name - Sycamore/Celtic Maple
Latin Name - Acer pseudoplatanus

This tree is not native to these shores, but might have been introduced by the Romans in the 1500’s and actually originates from central and southern Europe. This being said the Sycamore has long been naturalised in Britain and its wood has been used to make many smallish items like violins and wooden spoons. Being a very large and fast growing tree; it will reach skywards to about twenty-two metres. Whilst to many the tree is not native, recent studies suggest otherwise and predate pollen and wooden samples before historical measures.
This tree should not be undervalued for its environmental credentials playing host and a refuge to a wide range of wildlife. Beneficially, this tree is a very robust and is tolerant of many environmental factors including that of air pollution and strong winds.
